Okay, sounds a bit funny, but.... I have a 4yo who is ripe for the picking. LOL

I googled it and didnt' really come up with much, at least not what I'm looking for (which includes FREE).

I looked up DUCKS because Drew is all about ducks. Or he was last week. (This week it's snakes, and the fact that they eat mice. You should see him... one hand is a mouse, EEP EEP, and one hand is a snake, SSSSSS, and OH NO! snake will eat the mouse! -funny eating noises here- OH NO! Mouse gone!)
Anyway, I'm getting TOO MUCH information on any subject. He's 4 - well actually he WILL BE 4 on the 21st - and he doesn't care about what the coloring of a male mallard's neck is all about. KWIM?

I want simple unit studies, free and preferably printable, for my preschooler. A list of bunches of subjects would be good.
To me, a good one would be, a link on ducks, that includes a coloring page to say some ducks are yellow with orange feet. Another ocloring page for brown ducks. Something saying ducks walk on grass, and they can swim because of the shape of their feet. Ducks lay eggs, keep them in nests, and the eggs hatch into baby ducks. Ducks like to eat... plants, bread, whatever it is ducks eat. LOL And then we go to a park and feed the ducks.

Get it? LOL Something really simple.

I was able to preview a My Big Backyard magazine and LOVE them. (Got about a dozen issues via freecycle.) I was just getting an idea of what was in each, saving it on the comp for future reference, and Drew stole one. LOL It had chipmunks in it, so we looked at the pictures and learned that chipmunks climb trees, eat berries and acorns, and puff their cheeks out <LIKE THIS>. And he can still do all of that. We also learned about crabs... and I'm regretting that one some as he's now pinching my 2yo and when I get onto him he's saying "crab eat Brandon!"

LOL So these mags are great and I'll probably subscribe, but I want something on-demand too.... Got links? TIA!

you gals are so great!!!

I would encourage you to pick and choose what you want from these links to develop your own unit study.

This link has a lot of info, but easy to understand. Perhaps just pick and choose what facts you want to touch on, copy/paste those into Word, and use that for a basic overview? You could also copy/paste pics for handouts.

The gem of this link is the stuff at the bottom. There are coloring pages, songs, and stories.

This link has some crafts. You could pick one for the beginning of the unit study to get him excited (maybe talk about some of those facts while doing it), and maybe one at the end?

This link has stuff like doing the letter "D" for duck. But it also has stuff so that if you like you can incorporate math into your unit study. (The link for the duck puzzle doesn't go to a duck puzzle anymore, but other animals.)

One more link to look at is:
    http://www.123child.com/animals/duck.html
which has some really cool arts and crafts and other activities. There's one I thought was cool using an egg and vinegar (science).

Anyway, pick and choose. Hope you find something that you can work with!

The National Geographic magazine for that age is really, really good too. My 4yo liked it better than My Big Backyard. . .of course that could be bc we don't actually have a backyard!

www.enchantedlearning.com and www.everythingpreschool.com are good websites to check out. there is a yearly subscription fee to enchanted learning but it is soooo worth it IMO.

Thanks for the replies and links! I'll be checking them out in the next day or two....

I've been to and have marked EnchantedLearning and will pay for a sub as soon as we have $20. LOL Even for my 8yo it's being great!

Prof-Mom, did you accidentally leave out the first link? It reads like maybe you did... so just thought I'd check. LOL Thanks for all of the ones you sent!!

We're going to try to get to the library tomorrow (I've been trying to start doing this weekly, but we haven't gotten there yet), and I think I'm going to try and look up some of the magazines I've had recommended. I'll add that one to the list, thanks!

Can't wait to scope these, and bumping to the top in case anyone else has great input. :) Thanks again!
