I grade very little of my dss schoolwork. (They are 3rd and 4th grades.) Right now, we are working on comprehension and completion. They keep going until they "get it." I do grade things like spelling and math tests. Just to show them how they are doing. If they do something particularly badly, they have to do it over until I'm satisfied. But that hasn't been much of a problem so far. I don't keep anything like an overall grade for the year for any topic. So far, we just do it and that's good enough for me.

When I hsed my older son for 8th and 9th grade, I kept a more "school-like" record of his grades for each assignment. But I expected to probably move him back into ps and he had a terrible problem grasping the connection between the quality of his work and the grade he got in the class, so the grade book was sort of a lesson in and of itself.

I wouldn't bother with real grades until they are in middle school or so. But that's just me! :D

    grades

I do much the same as Boatgal. I don't grade everything but I do spelling and math. I do special projects too. I used to make report cards and give out but didn't do that this year. I use the 6 point grade system when I do grade. 94-100 A

I keep grades of tests and quizes/reviews. I tried to keep track of daily grades for subjects that didn't have any tests but I sort of gave that up. I keep these grades because I give a report card with letter grades.

    NOPE!

Though Rachael is now middle school age, so I need to keep records a a little better. I also keep her math tests, so I can objectively say how she's doing there, too.

If it were up to me, i would not keep them.. I like records, but don't need grades.

My oldest though however feels like he needs one.Its his personality. He loves them.

So for his *peace of mind* and since the crazy kid likes them.. I just give A's, B's or C's..

    Thats it!

But NO i don't like them or need them..

    Blessings

We do grades based on the test but...it's one of those things that we don't test unless we are ready to test - the beauty of homeschooling, right?

I don't know why I do grades but...I guess it's just built in after years of getting grades.

I mainly keep grades for record purposes. I figure if my kids ever go back to a school setting they will have a record of grades to satisfy the school. Also, my dd enjoys getting a report card! :D

I never kept track of grades until last year for my oldest ds, who was in 8th grade. Then it's all A's, because we teach to mastery---we don't move on until he has grasped and can work the concept. But for his benefit, and for records benefits, in case he does go to a school at some point, I made out a transcript with what he took and the grades. That's just the FINAL grades. I don't keep track of the daily grades...we just work through anything he misses until he gets it, then we move on.
