My worst fear has come true. Vicki will be in the 9th next year. I have about made myself sick over this. I just want to see what you think about my choices for next year. Algebra 1-Math U See Physical Science - Apologia Health - Abeka Composition - Jensen's formal writing Grammar - Easy Grammar Literature, Spelling, Poetry, Vocabulary -Abeka World Geography - Abeka 1 semester Spanish - Rosette Stone Computer Literacy - Life Pac 1 semester Physical Ed How does that look for the year?
9th grade My only suggestion is to add in a few short stories and a few novels for literature. Other than that, it looks like a good plan to me.
Are you in a state that sees geography and history in the same subject line? Also, I haven't looked at Abeka's high school health, but you might be doubling up your science with that and the Phy Sci. It looks like a well-rounded beginning to her year though! MT3
Health and Apologia's Physical Science are COMPLETELY different. It's Physical Science as in PHYSICS, not Physical as in body. My oldest did it this year - and I have to say for a kid who doesn't like science very much (least of all physics!), she loved the class/book, etc. Enjoy that. I agree about adding literature/short stories - although I don't know what's involved in the Abeka program, so they might being included in that?
Maybe I mispoke. My son just finished the Apologia Phy Science... but I don't know that I would have had him do the health course in the same year? When oldest DS did a health course (I've forgotten which curriculum we used at the moment) it was a full "science" class for the semester, including going to the fire dept for CPR classes. That was all I was curious about.
In NYS health does not count as a science but you only need a 1/2 credit in high school. I used Abeka Health for sd in high school. There is one section that does deal with human anatomy but the rest is on nutrition, illness, drugs and safety. We also had sd do a cpr course just for good measure. We did it very low key and kept it to one or two days a week for the year. Trish your plan looks very good. I will say if you find Abeka boring for lit (sd did) you can always just go mid year to doing some lit guides. I wish we had done that sooner with her but we kept going with Abeka because I did not know any better.
South Carolina State High School Graduation Requirements •English units: 4 •Math units: 4 •Social studies units: 3. 1 unit U.S. History and Constitution; .5 unit each of economics and U.S. government; 1 unit "other social studies." •Science units: 3 •P.E./Health units: 1. (1 unit P.E. or Junior ROTC) •Arts: 0 •Foreign language: 1 unit either foreign language or "career and technology education." Students in a college preparatory program must complete a unit of foreign language; students in a technology preparation program must complete a unit of Career and Technology Education. •Electives units: 7 •Other units: 1 unit computer science (including keyboarding) and 1 unit either foreign language or "career and technology education." Students in a college preparatory program must complete a unit of foreign language; students in a technology preparation program must complete a unit of Career and Technology Education. This is what is required to graduate in SC. It doesn't even look like health is required. I haven't really checked out the Abeka Literature yet. I will find some short stories and look at some lit guides. Thanks
I don't think that is necessarily needed. If the A Beka literature is enough for you, then you can just use that. I think it also depends on what your daughter's long term goals are. If she is wanting to go to college then maybe do some extra literature, but then again it may not be necessary. If she gets a good overview of the aspects of literature with A Beka, I don't see any reason to need anything more. That is my opinion. Some people think good classic literature is a must, some people don't, and some people are in between.
