I'm posting for a friend. She wants to homeschool her 5 yr old son. She was planning on taking him to museums but he is really not into it. Any ideas?
I am not sure I understand. He is not into museums, or into homeschool? I homeschool my 5-year-old and he is not into museums either. He loves school as long as it is exciting. Writing words just to be practicing or doing routine things bores him. Today I made him a worksheet, since he reads very well, and had him complete it. It was a glyph. Example: What color is your hair? red = square, brown = triangle, etc. He had to fill in the answers in words and shapes or numbers and then had to complete the picture. He had a good time. He took it and completed it with no help, and a lot of laughter. When it came to drawing a star he needed some help, but learned how to make one in no time. Then he got out his scissors and cut shapes. He got some writing practice without making it boring. If your friend wants to go to the museum she could focus on something to make it more interesting to her son. I would figure out a topic he is interested in and go to the museum to see just that one group of things. Boats, airplanes, old toys, scientists, animals. Whatever he is interested in. Have him video tape things there or she can take pictures or video tape him. I take pictures with a digital camera of things my son wants to remember and of him at different places. Dont stay too long. Leave him wanting more! Don't let him get to the point where he wants to leave. Then he will want to come back and see more. Maybe even something else you passed while while there will peak his interest to return to see more. I know my son's attention span at things like that is short. 20-30 minutes tops. Just looking at stuff doesn't interest him. He is a hands-on person. I have heard there are some Kid's Museums that are hands-on. Maybe she could find one of them nearby to take him. My husband says he went to one in Seattle when he was a kid and loved it.
