Last Sunday Freddy went to the 3rd funeral in a weeks time of a friend or a friends wife. It was very stressful on him and I was hoping he would rest after it was all over. But, on Sunday afternoon our unofficial grandson, his mom, his 9 pound little poodle, Bella and his mom's friend and her 2 small children went to a park to go walk and let the kids play. Just as they were getting out of the cars a very large dog jumped out of a car and attacked Bella. Bella was on her leash and Oz, who is eight years old was holding the leash. The big dog grabbed Bella by her back leg and Oz's mother grabbed her up in her left arm and started beating the big dog in the head with her right hand. People were running and screaming and grabbing dogs and kids but not helping her. The big dog's owner had grabbed his dog from behind and was pulling him but he would not let Bella go. The friend who came with Oz and his mom had just frozen but finally realized that his mom was screaming for her to get the children in a car because she was afraid if the dog turned Bella loose he might turn on the kids. She was sticking her left thumb in his eye, yelling at him and pounding his head with her right fist. By the way, she is tall but very thin (wears size 2) and is 40 years old. Finally the dog tried to get a better hold and she was able to ram her fist into his mouth. He released Bella and his owner fell backward with him and held him while she got Bella in the car. Blood was EVERYWHERE and Bella was torn up very badly. A lady ran up and said she was a vet and offered to help but they decided to go straight to the emergency vet. The big dog's owner called ahead and they met them at the door with a pain shot and let Oz see her for a second after they wrapped something around her so he didn't see all the gashes. They operated and told Oz's mom she needed to get her hand looked at but she wouldn't leave the vet's office. She did press on her index finger and it popped and seemed to move back into place. The vet had said it was dislocated. They were able to save Bella but she was a mess. Here it is a week later and she is still on antibiotics but is off the pain medicine now. She is walking almost as good as before and seems better each day. She stays here with me while Oz is at school. Yeah, I know, but she loves her Oz and he loves her. The big dog's owner has paid the vet bills and is paying for the doctor Oz's mom went to the next day. Three antibiotics and a shot for something. I can't think what that was right now. So....it has been a very long scary week. I am so thankful everyone is okay. If that dog had gone after one of the kids, well I don't want to think about that. God protected my grand boy and everyone there. He gave my friend strength and courage to handle the whole attack too. It was awful and she had terrible nightmares afterwards. I have dogs and love them, but I do not want a 150 pound dog that I could not control. Oz is doing okay. He was asking a lot of questions about being safe around other dogs but I think he will be okay. If you made it this far, i just want to add that God is so very good and I thank him so much for protecting those I love. Even the little four legged one!

I am glad Bella is recovering and doing well and the mom is ok too. What are the laws about dogs that attack in your area? I know here if a dog attacks anything it has to be put down.

I'm glad it turned out as well as possible, and I'm glad the owner of the big dog is paying. I would ask this person, however, to keep their dog under quarantine, and to never let the big dog out of his own yard without a muzzle!

Animal control was contacted by the doctor who treated my friends hand. He was required by law to report the dog bite. The dog has to be confined for several days but as far as I know they get to keep him. Bella gets her stitches and staples out Wed. afternoon. She is doing great.

If the large dog was mine, I would have had it put down instantly. If I could not afford the shot, I would have used a bullet.

We never tolerated a dog like that growing up. Unfortunately we did have a couple put down. Dogs were always considered animals first. If they could not be trusted, they were not kept, and they were not passed along to another family to get mauled by.

I teach my children that all dogs are to be considered suspect and to never get their face near a dog when petting it, and to avoid petting strange dogs for the most part.

I failed to update and let you know everyone is fine Bella is back to her old sweet self and we are so glad! The grand boy is so proud of her for "fighting" that pit bull and thinks she is the best poodle in the world!
