I am a third grade teacher at a small (preK-12) Christian school. We are currently using the Abeka curriculum prek-5. We are looking to make some curriculum changes at all of these grade levels most likely in math and language/spelling. I have been asked to serve as chair of the "curriculum committee" and I am needing a place to begin! We are at the VERY beginning stages of this LONG process. Does anyone have any suggestions on resources and/or websites to help us along the way?

All help will be appreciated!!! :D

I do not know if this will help you much but Rainbow Resource has a ton of curriculum to choose from. You can browse their website by subject and maybe find what you are looking for. Here is their website:

    www.rainbowresource.com/index.php

I think maybe some of the other ladies here might be able to help you better than I can because a majority of them use christian based curriculum ,where as I use non-christian based materials.
But..if I do run across something else that may help you I will post it for you.

    Hope this helps some,
    Crystal

Will you be looking for secular or Christian based curriculum?
Alpha Omega www.AOP.com is Christian based and sell complete curriculums or single subjects.
BJU is another option. I'm not sure of the web address or phone number.
www.corecurriculum has both Christian and secular.

WOW! Thanks to all for some great places to start!!!! We are not sure if the curriculum must be Christian based for the areas of Lang and Math. In the other areas it is vitally important to us. We are beginning with the land and math curriulums first. I really appreciate your help on this! :) Keep the ideas coming!!!!!

If cost is an issue, you might want to check into Christian Liberty Press. I have used their resources before and got some great online deals. I'll see if I can do a quick search and find their site for you. It is based in Chicago, I believe, at Christian Liberty Academy. They publish some of their own material and pass along the savings. They probably have special information for Christian schools as well.

I'll post again in just a minute.......

Keep in mind that as homeschoolers, we often don't use one curriculum. We pick and chose a lot. Also, many of what we use are designed with homeschoolers in mind, NOT large group of children.

I like "Learning Language Arts Through Literature" and "Writing Strands", but am not sure how adaptable they would be to a school setting. I also love "English From The Roots Up". This is a "teacher book", not a kid's workbook, that helps children recognize the Latin/Greek roots of English words. It can be used as young as third grade, but would be a supplement to your language curriculum. I actually used it for my daughter's spelling list last year (she was 9). I'm told they've got a Volume II out now.

For Math I use Saxon for the older grade (starting with 4th) and Horizons (put out by Alpha Omega) for younger. Saxon is a program that is often used in schools: I think Horizons is, too. Both companies also have language/phonics programs, too. Saxon has a web site, but don't have the address right here. I have :

    www.saxonhomeschool.com

I don't know if you can get to Saxon's "regular" site from there or not. Horizons you can get to from the AO address already posted.

I think you'd be better off talking with teachers of Christian schools. They are the ones that have used the curriculums in their classrooms, and would have a more informed opinion about them. I know my friend teaches overseas, and doesn't like Abeka at all.

Why is your school changing from Abeka? I'm just curious because I use Abeka with my 2 daughters. What is your opinion on their curriculum? Pros/cons? I, too, have looked into other curriculums for language/math. I have already changed from their spelling/penmanship. Thanks in advance for your reply!
