MOH isn't so much concerned about dates, either. She has about 7 important dates for all Ancient History, and does something similar with Vol. II. She says it's more important to see how the events fit in relationship with each other.

Well, unfortunately I agree with you and your last sentance. I can see my mother homeschooling us if that were something she had the opportunity to know about back in the day (I'm 51). Thank goodness that wasn't the case. In saying that though my mother would have done it for totally different reasons than I do it for. My mother would have been delirously happy to have been able to have isolated us from the world. In essence for us (my sister and I) the only interaction we had with other children/people was at school and church. We had no neighbors where we lived and until we were in high school we weren't allowed to go to friends houses for visits or spend the nights. Even in high school we were very limited and I think we were only allowed then because she was afraid people would talk about her if we weren't at least to some extent doing those things. On the other hand I hs my son because I feel that he needs more individual help that he can get in a public school setting. He has neighbor friends he plays with everyday and friends from when he was in public school that he sees occasionally. He is not socially limited at all the way we would have been.

I think my mom would have done a great job homeschooling! I wish I would've been homeschooled! :)

I often tell my mother that I learned more at home than in all my years of school put together. She doesn't believe me. My parents highly valued formal education, but it's true. They were the best teachers a child could have!

About celebrities and tutors. . .to me, one of the best (if not the best) aspects of HS is that I'm the one working with my kids. Sure, their choices are commendable, but definitely not the same as the HS that we all do.

I agree, it's not TRUE homeschooling if you, as the parent, do not have a part in the schooling at all!

I think, even though he can pay for someone to do the actual teaching, he is picking what they are learning. It's not the generic garb the schools make kids learn, to pass the standards tests. I love the freedom of choice in what we learn. I also like that he and others openly SAY they are homeschooling. I think it bodes well a lot of the time for us, having 'faces' representing homeschooling. Kwim? Just an opinion.

I personally prefer to teach my children though, see them learn things.

I think his idea is pretty good. Dates aren't too important as time periods and just knowing what order things took place. Some folks get to hung on dates.
I wish him the best with his kids.
