http://www.elearningk12.com/ I am strongly considering going this route for my DS(10). Anyone have any experience? I have spoken to them and they're very nice and helpful and not at all salesman-ey, which I liked. They seemed down to earth and honest. I can't seem to find any reviews online though. Anyone?
I'm not sure if what you mean is k12, the virtual school? If it is, we used k12 briefly 2 years ago and were not happy. To make a long story short, they were not flexible in the least. For one thing, we entered the school year in Dec and they required that the kids make up the work they missed. It made no sense. I mean, when you transfer schools you just drop in wherever they are, right? You aren't given the pile of work you missed. For another thing, the day was too long. It was 7-8 hours easily, then you probably had to do some on the weekends, too. I found the workload to be just ridiculous. Another thing I'll mention is that the levels seemed out of whack. My son's history book (6th grade) was unlike any elementary school book I've seen. It was written in small print, limited pictures, and very boring. One of the classes for my youngest daughter was like pre-school. Then the reading instruction was more like 2nd grade than kinder. The whole program for all 3 of my kids was wrong for one reason or another.
It's kind of like the regular K12 program, but not exactly. First, it's cheaper (we don't have the free version here). It's also much more flexible and doesn't seem too quickly paced. The K12 that's offered here is expensive! This one is actually a set of private schools that offer a homeschool version. I think the private schools are accredited and that might be why they use the K12 name? I'm not exactly sure on that one.
I'd love to hear what you think if you use it. I just took a quick look. My first knee-jerk reaction was "Seriously? How many homeschooled kids sit around working in a shirt, sweater, and tie?!" LOL...of course, that has nothing at all to do with the program itself...
No, they're showing off for the private school part of it. I think those are only in Louisiana. It's $50 a month and I can cancel anytime. Worst case, it doesn't work and we quit it. It's better than forking over $400 for something that ends up not working out, I guess.
It looks good to me. But I would guess they're not accredited, because they don't come right out and say they are, but rather give a statement such as "in our experience, colleges are more interested in your ACT/SAT score than where you got your diploma." I see there's a location in Houston, too. Apparently (from the website) they use MathUSee. This is a deal originated by some named individuals, so NOT the "K12" that's nationwide.
We use K12...the virtual school. I used it for two kids. We do NOT like it. I took one kid out and one will end his final year with them this year. The program is not bad. It just isn't for us. My son also complains he is not learning anything. He just gets the work done and moves on. It will depend on your situation. It does feel confining...but I have a friend who loves it and so do her kids.
I've looked at them. They use Compass Learning Oydssey. Which is what time4learning uses also. I had one boy like working on the computer and the other did not like it so much. So he would need to like being on the computer. I know time4learning (which goes through 8th grade) had the standards for each state and national standards all in there somehow. Mine took the standardized tests that year, and did really well!!! When I first found time4learning several years ago I read where parents were paying over a 100 dollars a month to use compass learning from the company. Time4Learning is only about 20.00 dollars a month. I consider it an excellent curriculum!!!!
I always wished to have this kind of schooling since childhood, used to a hate the monotonous schooling system.
