My daughters are very quiet. I think one is really shy but the other one I think has selective mutism. It's a social anxiety disorder and I'm not sure how to help her. My daughters only talk to us, her 2 grandmothers and 1 grandfather. My 8 yr old has one friend that she talks to at school and that's it. They've not said a word to their teachers, or anyone at church. They usually can talk to children when no other adults are around, but they won't talk to adults at all. I don't know what to do about it. Will they outgrow it or should I seek more help? Does anyone out there know of anyone who has had this problem?

    Thanks!

Discuss it with your dr. I have a friend who's dd has it. She wouldn't talk to ANYONE except her immediate family. She wouldn't even talk to other kids when adults weren't around. She visited psychiatrists and eventually took Prozac. Now, she is participating in class and talking some to others.
