I sort by person. Day 1 is the oldest clothes, Day 2 is middle child, Day 3 is the youngest, Day 4 is my clothes and Day 5 is the bedding. I have to do towels at least twice a week. We go thru them faster no that we go to the pool and I don't have seperate beach towels. The bedding is sometimes everyother week but same desinated day. My younger twos clothes can all go into thewasher but my oldest and me have to seperate some of our clothes or handwash some stuff.
I really only sort into 3~whites, colors and diapers. Bedding usually goes in separately too since nothing fits with it.
I have three different load types: Diapers Reds Everything else Since I wash everything on cold anyhow, I see no reason to separate lights/whites/darks like I was always taught. But I've turned too many of my husband's socks pink to not pull the reds by themselves. lol
I am a big time sorter. I have my whites, grays, dark blues and black, brights, towels, jeans, and tan pants. Mom my was as sorter, but she never taught me how and when she see how I sort clothes now she just laughs and tells me I way over do it! LOL
I sort: whites/tans..go together jeans/pants/jackets (when needed)..go together all darks/reds, etc..go together bedding towels Kids do their own and they throw theirs all in together (whites, darks, reds).
I separate whites, light colors, and dark colors. Sometimes I throw the whites in with the light colors. Also, diapers are washed separately.
I used to sort, but not anymore!! I just dump it in The only exceptions are something new and dark that will bleed.... then I'll separate darks out for a few wash cycles until I'm sure that it's colorfast. And of course, diapers are washed separately.
It gives me great joy to sort the laundry into whites, colors, and blacks. lol. When we had little babies I sorted adult clothes by colors, whites, and blacks, and all the baby clothes were washed separately all together in special laundry soap! DH just dumps them all in no matter what color. lol. I don't mind until my white shirts end up a different color. :/ lol
Oh.. I forgot... I also washed towels by themselves, since they don't get fabric softener and everything else does (except diapers, of course).
I sort mine and dh's laundry into lights and darks. Kids don't get seperated, but linens and diapers get washed seperate.
I separate ~ whites, colors, jeans, towels (if their is room in the whites I add the light colored towels or if they are colored I add them to the colored pile if room).
I TOTALLY sort! DH's work clothes reds darks/jeans whites- socks, underwear, etc whites/grays- shirts, sweats, etc cold loads- new t's, jeans towels bedding And I'm teaching my kids to sort just as much. I'm sure it will eventually change for them, but I'm kind of nuts about how I do laundry! lol  We also have skin allergies to detergent/softeners/etc- so I use ALL Free, regular bleach, and that's IT! MT3
Bedding is one kind of load, towels another (because we end up saving them up and making a whole load of just that), then DH does his own clothes (khakis and knit shirts, mostly) all together, and I do mine (all together), usually. If we want a specific item and there's not a whole load, then we'll each ask the other if they need to put some in. If dgs is with us, his go in with whichever has room and is being done at the time...
I am a sorter. I do Jeans, colors, whites, towels, and then baby's stuff. I just don't always sort light colors from darks if they don't tend to bleed off. I actually have bins next to my washer that stack and I have the kids place theirs in the appropriate bin. So nice then I don't have to sort near as much! Anyone find a way to make the Laundry do itself? Let us know if you have. LOL
I sort. One load of lights including whites and one load of darks. Light towels and bedding get tossed into any load. Really dirty and stinky items get washed separately. I love to sort items. It is relaxing. Sometimes late at night I will sort my beads for fun! I am always disappointed when there is nothing more to sort.
DH can't stand it that I don't sort - so he does most of his own I usually just try to keep the reds out until I know they won't bleed. I get excited now when the washer is actually empty - so I hurry up and throw stuff in. Previous life.... before farm..... I sorted...even with kids!! Now - I just don't have the time. Biggest issue right now is finding the time to put away the clothes!
