Hello!< I am looking for some answers here, and some discussion information>
** Do you assign your kids a report to do with out helping them through it?

~* Do you assign them with projects and let them follow a list of what to do and not help them?

What do you do to teach them to work on a report or project alone, with out helping them through it?

Finally, does anyone have a report, like on a state or country that thier child did that they can post so I can capture it and show my kids what in the world I am talking about?
Maybe someone can make one up on that video thing?
ANyway those are my starters, what you got?  : :D

I personally think it depends on the age of your child. I do assign work, but ds is only 4, so it's just his review stuff. Sorry I couldn't help more!

We finished our first year hs'ing in May. My dd is 10 and was in 5th grade. For our unit study on primates she had to research 5 different kinds of her choice and find information such as lifespan, habitat, traits, diet and interesting facts. I had planned to let her do it alone but then I realized she never learned how to do research or take notes in public school. I taught her how to research and how to take notes so we worked through them together but she did the work with me as back up. Now that she knows how to do it she will do it more on her own next year. I think they need to know what is expected and know how to do it before letting them do it alone.

What she said! That's exactly how I do it!

Often things aren't explained well enough, and we wonder why they're not doing it right! ;) So if they've been taught the right steps, they should do it more on their own. If not, do a couple of projects walking them through the steps and helping them do research, make an outline and write the report. After that they need to try it mostly on their own so they learn to "own it"!

Id so appreciate it!
    THANK YOU!

Well what Samantha wrote wasn't exactly a "report". She research 5 types of primates and then formatted breaking down each subtopic (life span, diet, etc..) under the main topic (the specific primate). I'm not sure what you'd call it really. She also wrote a creative writing paper and did that all by herself. I'm not sure I still have her project saved in word but I'll check.

I guess it depends. I have an 11 yr old ~ 7th grade in Oz ~ & she won't write reports yet without a lot of help & support. I know she knows how to research & put together what she has found. She's the one who got on the net, looked up the conservatorium & told me what she needed to get in! However she has writing issues & baulks if she thinks she's going to be asked to write about what she finds out. I am still getting round this by getting her to do a lot of visuals in report form. Not a help I know. Maybe I'm the one who should be panicking.

lol, thanks CR, you are helping me see that we all have the same need here.. I know in the past I asked a similar question and learned about Lap Books, but I want something more traditional to give us variety as I work on next years lesson planing.

I don't have it saved anymore since it is on paper and in final form. I just went ahead and deleted it because I didn't think I'd need it anymore. Sorry. Last month I cleaned out Word to make room for next year.

we have some we could share, but I can't figure out how to attach them - the files are too big. Can word files be resized in the same way that photos are?

Otherwise, I could email them to you, if you pm me.
dd is 11, yr 6. She works mostly independently on her reports now, although I usually read them and comment during the drafting phase. The biggest struggle with her is to get her to include enough detail

My dd13 is going in 8th this year and she works independently now. Before I needed to help her research and point in the right direction but now she is very independent. I think that it just depends on the kid because my ds11 isn't the same way.

my son is 12 (going into the 7th grade) and I still help some with the report writting. He does most of the research and we sit together and do the writting. He does do some writing on his own. He hates writting so he needs a little push. I would love to see what other kids his age are writting!!

Hey! I just figured out that if i copy and paste I can share dd's report without needing to attach it. You loose the pictures and fancy stuff, but you get the idea. dd is 11, in yr 6, and works very much independently. The assignment that follows was "Choose one of the endangered animals (from previous list) to investigate. Find out where it is found, how many are left in the wild, what threats exist and what is being done to ensure its survival. Write a report on your findings."

I would be very intereted to see other kids work - it is difficult sometimes to know if you are requiring enough, or too much, kwim? Anyone else going to share?

    GIANT PANDAS

Giant Pandas come from Southwest China, Asia. Male pandas are larger than females, as is usual with a lot of animals. Males weigh up to 115 kg, females are up to 100kg, and new-born babies are 90-130g.
Pandas can live in captivity for 20-30 years and 10-15 years in the wild. They are hard to make breed in captivity. Females look after babies for two years then have another one. Their gestation period is 112-163 days, and they begin breeding at 5-7 years.
I like pandas because they are very cute. They are black and white. Pandas are mammals. They belong to the bear family. There is only one other type of panda, the red panda. Their scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca.
An estimated 1600 pandas are left in the wild, with an estimated 221 in captivity in china alone. Threats to the giant panda are habitat loss and a very low birthrate. As always, poaching is included in threats to this beautiful bear.
Things being done to save it are captive breeding and artificial impregnation. Pandas often give birth to twins in captivity and this means a lot of pandas are born. Triplets are very rare and are almost always born in captivity.
The giant panda has been the World Wide Fund For Nature’s symbol sine 1961, when the group first formed. As of mid-2005, the Chinese government had created over 50 reserves for pandas, which protects over 45% of remaining panda habitat and over 10,400km².
Pandas eat a diet that consists of 99% bamboo and some, fish, grass, yams and other meat. Pandas in zoos are also fed are fed sugar cane, rice type porridge, carrots, sweet potatoes, special high fiber biscuits, and apples.

For the 5th grader. . .I probably would not collect formal reports but rather look towards projects that encourage synthesizing information. . .

It does depend on the child but 5th graders (from the viewpoint of this former 5th grade teacher) have a hard time pulling it all together.

A 9th grader I would likely require reports that are in a formal style as well as some of those project type things.

Re: writing Did someone say they had a hard time getting their kids to write a report although they were okay with the research stuff? I have found that sticking things on the computer has been very effective for getting around that. I am helping my daughter start a website/blog for her lemonade stand project this year. All of the sudden it's awesome to sit around and write for hours on end. Who knew?

thanks for the post of the report on pandas that was good example.
Also re putting it on computer here thats where they are for everything, I Want written work and cutting and pasting with scissors and paste... they can do the other way to easily, my kids even know how to make a power point project so I am not loking for that, I want a hold in my hand can show off to people type of report... not that anyone comes to our home for any reason it seems Lol, but I am hoping ot have an open house type thing for homeschoolers next fall .
