We are leaving for the beach in the morning. Vicki has never been. I am going to count as much as I can for school. We are going to Aquarium for sure. I thought maybe we could write a paper about the ocean. Does anybody have any suggestions that would be fun but educational.

Fun!!! I miss the beach. We usually go twice a summer but last year didn't go at all and I'm sure we won't be able to go this year either since we are moving.

How old is Vicki now? Have her use the map and see how far it is from one city to the other, that would be geography, and math. Have her help plan the meals and how much it would cost for the 3 of you to eat, math. The weather, have her chart the weather for each day that you will be gone, science. Have a great time and don't forget to write a journal, compostition.

okay, we did thsi last year with someone else -- try gathering shells, rocks, sand and making a terrarium style jar as a keep sake... also you can gather these things and and when you get home create a posaic on a peice of wood with tacky glue or a glue gun...
There are tons of things, gather objects and write about each one.. if youc ant bring them backhome take pictues and write in a journal of the trip. Where did you go, how long did it take to get there? How far did you have to drive in that time?
what did you do for lunchh? What was in the aquarium?
What was the most fun, where was the most exciting, what was boring?
That last question is important becuase ithelps kids see that yes somethings are boring lol
    its apart of life.

Mix sand with acrylic paints and paint a textured picture of the beach. :)

Why not just do practical explorations of the physical properties of sand, water, and sand/water mixtures, with regard to the proper sand/water proportions to maintain structural integrity in relation to the height of the structure. In other words, just build sand castles!!!

    I'm jealous! Have fun!

I have always thought I would love to live at the beach. We live very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway yet never seem to get to the mountains. Funny how we ignore what is right in front of us.

Dh lived on the beach in high school and said it was nice at first but then he hated it. You can never have a good hair day in that salty air and it does a number on your car's paint job.

Oh I LOVE Blue Ridge Parkway! We were there in August of 2008 when we went to the Smoky Mountains. It is beautiful!

Take along a good wildlife/bug/bird identification guide! Also a blank notebook is good for recording what you find.

I spent several summers on the Jersey shore as a child, and used to bring buckets of critters over to my mother. She'd take them all out and we'd identify each one before I let them all go.

I caught sand fleas, little coloured clams, hermit crabs, fiddler crabs, great big horseshoe crabs, jelly fish, a baby nurse shark, etc... And there's also driftwood, shark's eggs, seaweed, ocean-smoothed glass, fishermen's floats, and shells to collect. I also liked to try drawing the little sand pipers that hopped around on the edge of the water.

    Have fun on your trip!
