My MIL is a 6th grade teacher, and I know if you let every kid go to the restroom who said they had to go then it would be chaos. It may seem aweful, but I compare it to the prison where my DH works. You let one inmate out of his cell for a work release (AKA Hall Pass) and their passing notes to each other in different cells. Alot of times it's the same with kids. Let a kid go to the bathroom and their in everyone elses classroom peeking in, making faces in the windows, and (it's happened) forgot to go to the bathroom all together. So in retalliation, the more hall passes you use, as a teacher, the harder it gets on you from your higher ups.

Now, having said this, I think it's totally wrong. If the teacher could tell the girl couldn't hold it she needed to let her go. I mean...art is a fluff class. What was she teaching that was so important that nobody could leave?? On the other hand...the girl could have went during class switches. I'm on the fence as to who's fault this is entirely, but I do know that having her go in the bucket is TOTALLY wrong.

Which is proof that the school system can't handle the amount of students it facilitates. If the halls are not monitored to the point that students can peek in other classes then there needs to be more adults per student.
Will this ever take place? Of course not. We have the same problems in our schools.

First of all, when I was 14 years old, no teacher would have forced me to urinate in a bucket. I would have walked out of class. I was stumped on this because if the girl was 8 years old, then I could see the teacher "forcing" her, but perhaps this girl was not the type to speak up to the teacher. However, the bottom line is that the teacher is the adult! I would like to see that teacher squatting over a bucket so she doesn't have to leave the class.

The high school I attended was large. The students were given 7-10 minutes to get to class; the first bell you had to head to class and the second bell meant you were tardy. With the large number of students my high school housed, it wasn't always easy to stop at the restrooms when they were completely full each time. I understand that some students take advantage of hall passes. However, in the end, from what I have read in the linked article, the teacher was in the wrong because she was the adult and made a stupid decision. What did she think would come of it?

My sister had a man teacher who wouldn't allow her to use the restroom. My sister had problems with VERY heavy bleeding when on her cycle. My mom wrote a note to the teacher and he still refused to allow my sister to use the restroom. My mom called the teacher and he said that all my sister had to do was let him know she was on her period!
My mom was all over that one! lol
Imagine, a young girl telling her completely strange MALE teacher she needed to use the restroom becuase she was on her period.

Just because a teacher has a certificate doesn't mean they have any commonsense.

I'm betting there is more to this story than we know. The teacher may have been totally out of line, or it could be this young lady was a trouble student just looking to get out of class. The teacher could have sarcastically told her something like, "Yeah, right! Then use the bucket!" And the girl did just to be obnoxious. I seriously doubt she had to go THAT bad!

    ^^ This.

The media has a way with words and twisting things up. Not to mention the one who is telling the story.

The student "forced" to urinate in a water bottle in a Houston area school a few months back (it hit national Fox news) was completely blown out of proportion, not to mention was very much exaggerated by the student and his family. The school could not comment because of legality issues and student "privacy".

That school was in the school district where I used to teach; I heard the actual account first hand from friends. The actual story was quite a bit different than the media portrayed.
