    Science Fair?

Hi, I have a question. My pre-teen girls are transitioning from private school this year to home education next year. I have found that many of the extra-curricular opportunities for traditionally schooled children also exist for homeschooled children, thanks to those who have gone before us. However, my oldest daughter would like to participate in the regional science fair in our city (as she did in her old school). This fair does not state eligibility requirements; however, in reviewing the website, all of the regional participants appear to be from traditional schools. I have noticed that there is an occasional note of a homeschooled child at the upper levels of the fair, but that is nationally.

So the bottom line is that there is a state contact, but I am not sure whether I should contact this person about eligibility or would it be better to "fly under the radar" and stick to clear homeschool activities? I fully realize that this issue has legal overtones and am just interested in others' experiences as this will be our first year home educating. Thank you to anyone who can offer a comment. :)

At first, your best bet may be to contact local HS groups (check yahoo groups, Facebook, etc.) and see if there are any groups participating. It's been my experience that homeschoolers are welcome in everything we've done, but they must be part of "a school" (which could also mean any group of people who collectively call themselves a school).

If you can't find a group to work with, definitely contact the people in charge to find out what you need to do to participate. Keep going up the food chain until you find someone in charge who actually knows the answer. A lot of competitions use volunteers, and they won't necessarily know the answer.

I think it cannot hurt to ask especially if homeschoolers participate elsewhere.
