My baby is 3 weeks old now. He breastfeeds. But he has horrible diaper rash. He has diarhea I think. I took him to the doctor on Monday who suggested taking stool samples, but his bms are too wet for it, they soak in to the diaper. Plus, he has diaper rash. I put Diaper Rash Ointment on with each change, but he is still red. Any suggestions? The ointment seems to be generic stuff the hospital gave me when he was born as he had this even in the hospital.

As far as the diarhea goes, would you be worried or give it more time? Most his diapers have poo in it. He seems to have gas and when he passes, out comes the loose poo. Please offer me your opinions on this if you can.

I don't know how much milk you are drinking, but see if drinking less will help babe out. I know I had a probably with lil one being allergic to milk. I went off it for a little while about a month to 2 months...no dairy & then slowly brought it back. It sounds a lot like what you are saying.

The best diaper rash ointment I used was Butt Paste. It worked really well.

When my middle one was a baby she had HORRIBLE diaper rash. NOTHING would get rid of it. The ped. finally told us to put Phillips Milk of Magnesia on it. I was extremely skeptical, but was desperate at this point. Well......lo and behold it actually worked!

my dd had a bad rash all the time her dr. gave an onintment for yeast ( baby yeast) and it cleared it up. I used corn starch with the diaper rash stuff it helped.

Another thing to consider it the diapers themselves. My oldest could not use certain brands. As for clearing up the rash, if it is possible, let him "air out" for a while each day, put him down on something washable, without a diaper- and use a warm washcloth to clean rather than wipes. I do agree that you should take a look at your diet. I'm not sure baby's BM's should be that loose. Breast babies tend to have looser BM's but not diarrhea. Hope it clears up soon!

Yes, look at what you are eating, keep a food journal if it helps and see if you can find a connection.

Now for the diaper rash I'll tell you what works miracles for me but you have to promise not to laugh.............brown flour, yup plain old regular all purpose flour toasted to a light brown in a pan and then let it cool and sprinkle on baby....the rash will be gone overnight! It's cheap, it works, I've always got flour on hand, and I love it! I swear by the stuff...you really have to try it to believe it but it does work.

I had an infant that was allergic to baby wipes and he had horrific diaper rash within a few weeks. I bought a big stack of wash rags and used those with warm water instead.

For diaper rash I had the best luck using Eucerin cream--the thick stuff in a tub, not the lotion. I've heard the Milk of Magnesia works well too.

I used Beaudreux Butt Cream available at WalMart for my dd's horrible rash. Cleared it up in no time.

Use athlete's foot cream on the diaper rash. Phillip had it bad, and someone in the church nursery told me to try it, and it REALLY made a difference! I guess the diaper rash was actually fungal in nature, and the cream deals with that.

Your diet may be key to his problem. You can go on a low allergen diet (just google low allergen diet + breastfeeding). May absolutely be that he just can't break down something in your food. My oldest tolerated my diet just fine, but everytime I had broccoli she would have the most gas. My youngest was very sensitive to my diet. She also had horrible diaper rash. I tried several brands of diapers and the only ones that didn't irritate her were WalMart and Kroger store brands...the more expensive ones broke her out. I also used warm wash cloths instead of wipes at home. Boudreaux's Butt Paste was my cream of choice too...

All I can do is repeat what the other's have said. Check your diet, milk products seem to be the best first choice. Then watch eating anything that gives you gas, your little one has probably inherited the same sensitivity.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste is the best for the diaper rash, but if you can't find it my next choice would be A & D Ointment.

I also had problems with the disposable diapers. One of my children was sensitive to most things including fabric softener. On her I switched to cloth diapers and washcloths. Then washed them in a load by themselves with Dreft detergent and used 1/2 cup of White Vinegar in the rinse cycle. From experience on myself, cornstarch can sting a little on a raw rash. But it does work once the rash is healing to keep it from re-emerging. Just be sure to thouroughly wash off all ointment or powder at each changing. Sometimes I would just place the washcloth over the rash area to soak for a minute before gently wiping. If I did this today I would definately invest in the softer velour washcloths, they are not as abrasive.

Good luck with the baby. Don't be overwhelmed by the advice. Try what sounds the best to you. And remember, there is no instruction manual with an infant. We all had to learn what worked best. I guarantee we were all at least hesitant or a little scared the first time we were in full charge of a baby. You will do fine.

when donald was getting spinal taps regularly for his leukimia (he was still in diapers) the doctor noticed he had a bad but rash and gave me a medicated ointment.............. then later on my own doctor prescribed the same ointment for my foot problem. I think it has cortizol in it or something like that......... so now I use it on anything like that that has to do with fungas. ........oh and on a different note my dh had foot fungas and I told him to use the cream he put the active ingredient in and asked if it was for yeast infection (internal stuff) I said no its for out side your body only but everything he got from googling it said that.

I have not read all the responses so sorry if I am a repeat. Try zinc oxide for it. My dd had horrible diaper rash and such when she was a baby and it worked wonders on her red bum.

My doctor told me to stop using diaper creams when my babies got bad rashes. She said that many are hard to wipe off and therefore you do more wiping/irritating to get the baby clean. She recommended slathering their hinneys with Vasoline. It worked, and it did make the cleaning easier.

What kind of diapers are you using? If you are using disposables I would try using cloth. I would also make sure you are changing the diaper as soon as it is soiled or wet. For newborns that is about 10-12 times per day.

I used cloth for all 3 of my kids and rarely had a rash and I didn't use diaper ointment.

well what I did for my dd who had it so bad, is when I changed her I got a wet wash cloth warm, with just water, no baby wipes, and cleaned her up. Then I would turn the blow dryer low and dry her really good. Don't put close to there little skin.
After dry well. I put corn starch on it. It clear right up.
    Easy and cheap.

Have you squirted some breastmilk on it (the rash) and let it dry, then let her air out for a while? Breastmilk cures all kinds of things...

It is either one or a combination of:
    • Types of diapers, it seems disposables cause this more than cloth.
    • Detergent and/or fabric softener if using cloth diapers.
    • Your diet.
    • What is being used to wash up the area.
    • Not changing often enough.

My daughter only had about three times when she was just a bit red when I used cloth diapers, but we used a Calendula, a zinc oxide ointment, that cleared it up in just a day. What we had left over we used for burns and sunburns.
