Did your teen boys get skinny all of a sudden?

My 13yo son was a roly-poly little boy, who sometimes got teased by the neighbourhood girls for being "fat" (even though he really wasn't - just "at risk" according to the chart). As late as last January he was complaining that he still thought he was fat, even though he had at most a bit of a soft middle. Not actual fat, just lack of exercise. He was pretty normal at that point.

Then last month he got sick for a few weeks, grew an inch, and now all of a sudden he's underweight! Down in the 17th percentile. His elbows are sticking out. I thought he'd gain that weight back when he got better, but instead he's gone and lost a little more.

Is this normal for teen boys? Do they go through a skinny phase?

I think it would depend on how tall you and your hubby are. My cousin was roly poly and then around 14 he started to grow up and up and up now at 20 he's done at 6' 7" seriously just keep an eye on it. It may be normal for your family.

Well... my husband's 5' 10'', but he was a preemie who probably could have been taller.

My son's already 5' 9 1/2, and two inches taller than me! It's scary to think he might still have a lot more growing still to do, since he's only 13.

Mine was a chubby 12-13 yo, the shortest on his baseball team. Then he shot up, outgrew some shoes, then eventually settled in at just about 6' and was pretty good there for awhile, but now he's 28 and pretty chubby again!

My 11yo can''t afford to get any skinnier!!! He wears slim pants, and even then needs a belt!

Pants are a big problem, definitely! I bought him new pants last spring because all his old ones had become too tight around the waist. Then his waist shrunk, so I bought him new ones last fall. Now his waist has shrunk again, and he's having to sort of fold the waist over and cinch it in with a belt. It looks terrible, but I've pretty much given up by this point. I'll just wait another month and then buy him a lot of elastic waisted shorts and he can skip wearing pants altogether until next September.

kbabe lol. I don't think all boys are roly poly. Look at family history to draw conclusions on how your kids should be. I know my hubby pretty much had a standard body all through growing up. And same goes for my side of the family. So that's what I am expecting to see when the growth starts later. :D

My 21 year old was a chubby little kid and now he wears a 27 inch waist and a 32 inch inseam. He could wear a 26/32 if we could find them! He is about 5' 10''.

When my ds was about 4, I couldn't find jeans skinny enough for him. If they were skinny enough, they were too short. I really really appreciated warm weather when he could wear elastic-waist shorts all the time. His ds who just turned 6 is about the same, only now they make little boys' pants with adjustable waists! Thanks Heavens! When ds was about 8, he outgrew three sizes of pants between school starting and Christmas. Then he could wear regular size jeans. By the time he was 12 we actually had to get Husky. Then he shot up and was great with 32/32 for a long time, although now it's more like 42 cargo shorts.

Yes. My son was short and fat until he was 12. He wore size 16 pants for boys, but they were tight and we had to roll up the legs. One year later he still wore the EXACT same pants, only with a belt and they were a bit short. It cracked me up!

My son will be 11 in June, and although he's roly poly, he's pretty tall for his age. He wears a size 18 . But his biological father (who hasn't been in the picture since he was 2) is 6'5" and skinny. I'm 5'5" and "fluffy",. My daughter is 5, and is plus size like me but I never put pressure on my kids. They have a healthy body image and that's the way I like it. God made us all different shapes and sizes.

Yep, my 10y old son went to NY for a month and came back taller and thinner. Even though I'm told he ate like a horse. I'm 4"9 and he looks me in the eye. He was in a 18/20 in the waist and now he can fit back into his 14/16 but they are too short.

There's heart disease and diabetes in our family (plus assorted health complications), and my son is hypoglycemic (pre-diabetic), so while I try not to put pressure on the kids, I do emphasize healthy eating and active living.

God made us all different shapes and sizes, but we should still try to take good care of what we've been given. (As I'm sure you do!)

Do all teen boys go through this? I should hope not! My 3 are already skinny, if they get any skinnier, there will be nothing left!
Your son is growing up, and will go through all kinds of awkward stages.

And here's the unwanted advice I always get from nosy old ladies at grocery stores who stare my little dervishes down: "relish every second!".

You're so right! And I'm getting used to his new look, though we're still getting comments from relatives who don't see him every day!

 We do, lol! My kids are very active...my son plays football, basketball, and baseball and my daughter is a cheerleader and plays softball. We're just genetically "thicker" than most, but I wouldn't consider my kids, or myself obese. They usually trim down a lot during the summer months from being outside in all this GA heat and swimming, so nothing to worry about. I was just trying to say that even though they may be "heavier" than some of the kids their age, they have healthy body images. Sometimes I worry that my daughter will become too vain!!!!

On another note, their doctor has told me countless times that even though they may be on a higher percentile for height and weight, they still chart normally on the growth chart. I hope this eases your mind some, lol!

Before my son hit his growth spurt, our new family doctor was shocked to learn that my ds did martial arts 10 hours a week - he just did not have the physique of a young athlete! Plus, they don't get candy a lot (outside of holiday) or pop, so no one could understand why he looked SOOO pudgy. I am 5'10" and had to explain to people that I looked JUST like that until puberty, and I stayed the same weight, but stretched like silly puddy. Suddenly my son's figure made a lot more sense!
