I know it has been a while, and that some of you never got to see the show.

I told you I would never give up and I didn't. I now have the show recorded for you to view. It took some wrangling, but I finally figured out how to get all the programs to talk to each other and viola!

    Here ya go....
    The Great Education Debate

    Whew!

    dr. phil school "debate"

I just viewed this online...thanks for posting. I couln't stand to watch all of it, as it just annoyed me so. Dr. Phil has no room in that big head of his for the truth, apparently. Focusing on unschooling, radical unschooling, and putting all of homeschooling in that basket is so inflammatory. I guess that's the name of the game on tv talk shows. I liked him better when he was a guest on Oprah, and didn't have to worry about his ratings.

As my husband, a convert to homeschooling and a public school teacher, just said: there's one factor that makes the difference, whether it's homeschooling or public school, and that is the parents. Involved, caring parents will create involved, caring and EDUCATED children.

Thanks for posting the show. I had heard lots about it but never seen it. I could not watch all of it. Dr. Phil makes me sick! I think I am just as smart if not smarter than my ds and dd teachers they had in public school. My son is not ashamed of reading anymore. He can do it and hsling helped with that. I could vent on and on about this all day. I know parents who are glad to put their kids on a bus everyday and "get rid" of them. I think those people are the ones with the probs not us.
When kids or adults commit crimes the reporters go back to see what their childhood was like and alot were bullied or molested in school and their parents never had time for them. We are learning in our home and I resent his remarks.
Dr Phil is not welcome in our home.
Thanks everyone for letting me vent.:)

Thanks for posting that. It was certainly interesting. In actual fact he didn't debate anything - there were no clear distinctions between educational philosophies, just popular tripe. he introduced one hs couple and they didn't even get to say a word. the great un-debate!

    Dr. Phil...show and remarks

To all who have seen the show and have detested it. I am the mother of three. and am now in the debate with the dh over to hs our daughter. This show was perfect. The problem I have is.. It doesn't portray what some public schools are "TRULY" like our elementary school here has been on accademic EMERGENCY for three years. And now Parents here are being offered the chance to take kids and have them put in private schools all for the fact they were not receiving the education in there school. Hello DR. PHIL why don't you take a look on the other spectrums. Also have him take a look at the mothers who punch and choke there kids all because they talked back on sidewalk infront of office at school. And have the school do nothing except send him home with the same parent!@!@! I am so frustrated.. DH thinks our daughter will miss out on socialization. WHAT TO DO!!!!!

My husband teaches Algebra I in the public school in my neighborhood. He got into a discussion one day with a man who taught English in another high school in our district. This man's wife wanted to homeschool, and his biggest concern was "THE S WORD" (as veteran homeschoolers refer to it, lol!). Carl told him to spend ten minutes in the lunch room not doing ANYTHING but listening and observing what the kids around him were doing and saying. Then come back, and they'd talk if this was REALLY the kind of socialization he wanted his daughter involved in. The man understood immediately what Carl meant.

And this is the realizty of "socialization" in public schools. It is an extremely negative experience. So many of my friends with "good" kids listen to their language deteriorate. The young people at our church act one way at church, and their language and talk is totally different when at this one kid's house (because her mom is clueless!). They are pressuring my 12yo daughter that "so-and-so REALLY LIKES you!!! You should go out with him!!!" My kids are involved with AWANAS, 4-H, dance (dd10), soccer (dd12, ds7), youth group (dd12), Sunday School, pick-up baseball in the summer, playing with kids in the neighborhood and at the pool. They do not "want" for socialization!

Yep, that's the "S" word for us! It's just that people are duped into thinking that ps is the thing to do. What kind of socialization do you get there? dirty language, discussions about se-ual things as being okay, drugs, guns, alcohol, teasing, bullying, labels, fights, how to skip class and get away with it, how to cheat on tests, how to pay someone to do your work so you don't have to..............NOT positive socialization! Are you SURE that's what you want for your child?

There is so much available for homeschoolers these days! They get socialization in all sorts of ways that are positive and good for them! They don't get the bullying and teasing, and are not labeled. They study at levels they need to to learn well: they can slow down for things that are harder to work through, and speed up when they know it, there are so many things available that my kids asked if we could stay home more! Homeschooled kids socialize with people of all ages, which is how the "real World" is! Kids in ps socialize with kids all their own age who all sit in desks that are the same, and often they can't talk during lunch (too noisy) or run during recess (too dangerous, someone may get hurt and sue the school)....How is that better than what homeschoolers get? It's NOT!

Okay, can you tell which I think is a better choice for the children?! ;)
