I need some opinions on a curriculum for teaching Spanish. I have a thick southern accent being from SC. I also don't speak any Spanish. I have looked at every curriculum. I also looked at Rosetta Stone. I don't know what I would have to purchase in the Rosetta Stone. I want Vicki to take 2 years of a foreign language. Any opinions would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

Dumartin, did you buy the homeschool version? How do you to buy number 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5. I don't understand that.

Trish, we use Rosetta Stone. Been using it for several years. When we purchased it for our oldest, I was real excited about the talking feature of Rosetta Stone. But my oldest had a horrible Spanish accent. We tried and tried, but it just wasn't worth it to spend so much time on that portion. So, we don't do it. (If that is what you're afraid of regarding your Southern accent)

We did purchase the homeschooling edition. My understanding is that Level 1 is the equivalent of 2 years of a language.

I tried Rachael with Rosetta Stone French, but it really didn't work for us. I eventually went with SOS; it wasn't her favorite, but she DID learn.

Her friend took two years of Rosetta Stone French. This year, she's in third quarter French at a local community college, and having a very difficult time. She didn't know how to conjugate verbs AT ALL, as well as other basic stuff; that's part of Rosetta Stone's curriculum. It just teaches rote memorization. I've given the friend a pretty decent French grammar that I bought at the library for $1, and she's been going through it. That's been helping her bring the grades up.

Check and see if your library has Mango. I am loving it and it goes over the grammar. And it is free...

OpenMinded, what is Mango? I've never heard of that. Thanks everyone. I guess my mind is more speaking than the writing. I will need something that is good at both.

If your library has it there is a section on this site that shows you how to find it. If you scroll all the way down at the bottom, there is a library locator.

I don't really like rosetta stone. I feel like I don't really know what I'm saying. Since they teach immersion, there are times I know the "right" answer, but don't know what it means. Someone recently suggested spanish in ten minutes a day, but I'm still not sure what direction we'll take next.

Openminded, our county doesn't have it. Thank you very much though. I'm going to play around their website.

Mykidsrock, I will check out Spanish in 10 minutes also. Your youngest son and my daughter have the same birthday. Hers is April 21, 1998. A very good day. lol

As others have suggested, Rosetta Stone uses an immersion approach-- functional language usage. It's not going to be as thorough with things like verb conjugation, writing skills, etc. With my boys being so young, we are only doing the computer portion this year (oral and listening skills mostly). Next year, we plan to redo level 1, using the written materials as well. My goal is merely exposure, in the hopes that, when they are older, they will more easily learn the language.

We used SOS because it has worked for dd and ds both. They know enough to talk to friends from Mexico and know that they are saying words differently. lol

We like Mango, too, especially the voice recognition feature. It's a great free resource that our library offers online. And, there are many languages from which to choose.

I used La Clase Divertida when my kids were young. It means "The Fun Class" in Spanish and it is fun and very easy to use. It's available at Christian Book. I think there are 3 levels of it. It's Christian and was written by a man who is a Spanish teacher and homeschools his daughter. You might want to check it out.
