I am trying to think of some fun, easy and something good my two dd will love to make as well as eat the first week of school. They are 9 and 11. They both love to cook and make things. I wanted something that wouldn't take much time but is funny and they will enjoy doing and ask to do it again some day.
    Thanks for all your help.
    Kristy TX

    Hi Kristi...

What will your theme be for your first week? If it's just "Back to School" you could do anything schoolish...apple cupcakes, bus cake, chalkboard cake, chalkboard ice cream sandwiches (we did these this year), pencil cake, etc.

The family fun website has tons of good recipes and cake/cupcake designs.

We use a book called BooK Cooks here. The kids read a story and then follow an easy cooking recipes. The reciepes are tied to a story. This is a K-3 curriculum, but I've seen older versions cook books for kids. We were reading some of the American Girls History Books and Little House books and did the craft and reciepes from the books. We have lots of fun trying them out. We were reading a civil war book and attempted hard tack. (ick, ick... .)

Yep, Family Fun has some cute ones. Also check out http://www.kraftfoods.com/kf/

Right now they have the CUTEST swim cake - you've got to see it! Oh where do these people find time to come up with these things? LOL

1 pkg. (2-layer size) cake mix, any flavor
    2 cups boiling water
2 pkg. (4-serving size each) JELL-O Brand Berry Blue Flavor Gelatin
    1 cup cold water
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed
56 Mini OREO Bite Size Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
    6 TEDDY GRAHAMS Graham Snacks
    5 LIFE SAVERS GUMMIES
    4 gummy fish

PREPARE cake batter and bake in 13x9-inch baking pan as directed on package. Cool completely.
INVERT cake onto large platter; remove pan. Using a serrated knife, cut and scoop out a shallow rectangle from center of cake, leaving a 2-inch border of cake on all sides and a thin layer of cake on the bottom. Reserve removed cake for snacking.
STIR boiling water into gelatin in large bowl until completely dissolved. Stir in cold water. Refrigerate about 1-1/4 hours until slightly thickened (the consistency of unbeaten egg whites). (Or, see Tip below for a quicker set method.) Pour thickened gelatin into center of cake. Refrigerate 3 hours or until set.
FROST borders of cake with whipped topping. Decorate with remaining ingredients as desired to resemble a swimming pool. Store in refrigerator.

    KRAFT KITCHENS TIPS

    Fun Idea
Insert gummy fish and octopus candies into gelatin "pool" before refrigerating for an added treat!

    Take a Shortcut
For a quick-set gelatin, simply add 4 cups ice cubes to the dissolved gelatin mixture in place of the 1 cup cold water; stir until gelatin begins to thicken, about 8 minutes (spoon drawn through leaves a definite impression). Remove any unmelted ice. Pour thickened gelatin into center of cake; continue as directed.

VBS this year is an Olympic theme. The girls got a kick out of their snack the other day. It was a Graham cracker with BLUE icing on it. Then they took the Twizzlers that peals into really thin "ropes" and placed the two of the "ropes" on the cracker, long ways. Then they put Gummy Bears lying down in each section. It was a Swim Meet! The blue was the water, and the "ropes" divided them into swim lanes, and the bears were the racers!

Here is an easy and YUMMY cake......it's really great in the summer since it is chilled.

    Better-Than-"Anything" Cake

Cake mix (devil's food or German chocolate work best)
    sweetened condensed milk
    carmel ice cream topping
    hot fudge ice cream topping
Cool Whip (enough to cover cake)
    chocolate bar (optional)

Make the cake mix as directed. While still hot, poke holes all over the top with the handle of a wooden spoon. Drizzle over top of warm cake (and especially in the holes! :D ) sweetened condensed milk, carmel topping, and hot fudge in that order. Chill. Top with Cool Whip. If desired, shave some chocolate bar onto the top for a nice presentation.

I don't use the entire contents of any of the toppings. It is really rich when you use 1/2 to 3/4 of each. The Cool Whip, however, gets 1 1/2 containers per cake! ENJOY!!!

    Brooke,
I just saw a very similar recipe on another forum. It was called "Kevin Costner Cake"- don't ask me why!
It was just like yours, only without the hot fudge. But, under the cool whip, you put crushed heath bars (and use them for garnish on top as well).
Either way, it sounds really yummy! I need to try it!

My favorite recipe site is www.allrecipes.com. You can search all different kinds of foods or search for certain ingredients to include or avoid. It's wonderful!
