I am getting in the mood to plant the garden with all this talk about canning and freezing. Who is putting in a garden and what are you planting? We are putting in: Strawberries corn beans zucchinni peppers beets cauliflower broccoli lima beans summer squash cabbage carrots I can't wait to get the garden planted!!! Dh cut a lot of trees down in our woods and gave me a BIG space to plant this year. The soil is a rich black color. I am praying for the right weather - so we can have a lot to can and sell. Anyone else?
I'm very excited about my garden this year too! I have an even bigger space than I had last year. Of course I can't even think of starting until at least Mother's Day. This year I'm going to grow-blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, green onions, swiss chard, yellow squash, zucchini, cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumbers, peppers, green beans, corn, and pumpkins....I think that's it!
Well I have already started. I have my seedlings started in the house and the greenhouse. With out short growing season here this is what I have to do if I want anything to grow. Also we have a place for a pumpkin patch set out. A couple smaller outside gardens. Well my whole back yard is going to be a growing area this year. Good thing I have a large front yard.LOL Here is what we are growing. (now keep in mind I am trying out things to see what I can get to grow and such) Corn green beans (a couple different types) sugar snap peas peas carrots (all kinds of them, even the purple dragon ones) brussel sprouts ( green and red) lettuce (iceburg and romaine) radishes onions (green, white, and red) leeks bell peppers (all different colors and types) tomatoes (all different kinds- we are trying out the upside down containers) broccoli squash (yellow and zucchini) cabbage pumpkins watermelons ( this one is iffy, but worth a try) cucumbers strawberries herbs -(oregano, chives, basil, mint, rosemary, chamomile, lavender) Also if you want to include LOTS and LOTS of flowers!!!
Well... we have a garden started and growing, but unfortunately we are going to have to walk away from most of it. Dh says he's not leaving the tomatoes, and maybe he can take the peppers. Here's what we have growing now: tomatoes red bell peppers green bell peppers yellow onions potatoes romaine lettuce cabbage corn cantaloupe Last year we had: carrots (kids pulled up) broccoli (didn't sprout) okra (didn't sprout) squash (this stuff can grow anywhere, i swear) cucumbers (didn't sprout) yellow onions (did okay, regrowing some this year to let seed out) Dh said we can do a fall garden at the new house. I'm tempted to have him *try* to transplant at least half of everything growing!!
We are doing small container gardening since we have limited space. I enjoy planting bulbs that will be enjoyed during the summer months so I am planning on planting Calidiums. In late May, we'll be planting mimi pumpkin squash and pie pumpkin seeds that we saved from last year. This spring I want to try my hand at growing banana peppers, cherry tomatoes, and other vegetables that will do well in small containers. My other optoin is to have DH construct a raised plant bed out of wood that I can use but I doubt he'll do it.
It is still early to put most stuff in hear. it froze tonight as a matter of fact. Burrr. I did put in 200 onion slips, and 100 strawberry plants. I also put in 6 grape vines along the back fence. Upcoming plans include, lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, okra, potatoes, herbs, peans, snow peas the rest will depend on whether or not I can get more space tilled.
We are going to double the size of our garden, which is almost necessary since I planted ther rest with garlic in the fall, and it's STILL growing. When I asked around, no one could tell me when it would be ready, only what it would look like. Well, it's not ready! So in the new beds and in between the current garlic, I'll plant: squash (winter and summer) melons (watermelon and cantelope type) tomatoes (cherry and regular) okra cucumbers rosella borage peppers (sweet & hot) I already have abed of strawberry plants, which last year produced great foliage and about 3 berries >:-( I will do more herbs (basil, parsley, anis, bee balm, oregano), but right now my house is *full* of seedlings, and I just don't have room for more. I will also pick up some onion seed and interplant those in just about everything (except the garlic, I guess). The fire ants apparently HATED the onions last year, because that was the only garden bed they stayed out of.
I have onions, strawberries, and peas started. We also have blackberries and raspberries (not sure if this plant is going to make it though ) I'm going to plant tomatoes cucumbers okra squash zuccini green beans
we can't do garden we only have sand, does anyone know what you can grow in sand. I miss gardens. Told dh lets move I want a garden and trees.
We don't have a true garden spot, but we made a raised bed last year, about 6' by 6'. Last year we had tomatoes, peppers and basil in there. We have the supper short growing season here too so we can't plany outside yet. Dh did make a greenhouse frame for our bed last fall (Our first freeze happened about the same time our first tomatoes got ripe, LOL). The greenhouse with a space heater on cold nights alowed us to have tomatoes until Thanksgiving, but the electric bill was crazy Not sure when he wants to put that up this spring. Our snow finally all melted Tuesday We also grow a few zuchs and yellow crookneck in the flower beds around the yard. We have too much shade for many things. We have a couple, mostly decorative, plum trees. The plums are very small, but taste good. We also have a huge apple tree. The first fall we were here it was loaded, last year there were hardly any. We are hoping for another good year.
We have a raised bed and several containers. I've already planted onions, carrots, lettuce and spinach. We did a tepee that has peas planted around the base- when it gets warmer, we'll add pole beans to it. The kids love their little tepee! I'm also going to try sweet potatoes, tomatoes, red peppers, a variety of herbs and flowers. I also have a small area for strawberries and I'm going to try blueberries this year. Hopefully it will be a good year- I'm still learning ALOT on the whole gardening front!
Man, I wish I was joining you guys. My grandmother always had a garden when we were growing up, and you just can't beat those cucumbers, tomatoes, and squash. And the money that's saved must be huge! I just never seem to have any luck with gardening. Tried to grow pumpkins last year, but we started the seeds too late and they froze while in bloom! I'm almost afraid to try again! What is EASY to grow? I mean, something so easy that a moron with no green thumbs could handle??
Any updates on the gardens? I am in zone 6b and so far, my tomato plants aren't as awesome as I'd like. As a matter of fact, quite a few died and gave in to disease. I have maybe six remaining. My squash is doing fabulous and my sunflowers are as well. We planted a few pea plants just to grow for seed. I might do a fall crop of those. Watermelon, cucumber, canteloupe are probably not going to go as planned. As for my onions, can't find them...never showed up to the party. I do wish it would stop raining and warm up a bit. I'd like to see things dry out before anything in my garden starts asking for a boat!
The dogs destroyed the fence, so rabbits have been into my peas. They're usually much taller and better by now. Tomatoes are slow, too, am not sure why. My beans are looking good, though!
I only have an herb garden and dh attempted to grow corn and tomatoes this year. I say attempted because it looked like all was going great, but looks are deceiving. We ended up with little nubbins. I spoke with my dad earlier who is an old time farmer from way back in the day. He is going to write down all his "garden knowledge" for here in our area of Texas - when to plant what where and when to harvest it all for the best produce. I am hoping to be able to have a nice fall garden. I had a plan on where to expand our tiny garden but dh says it won't work because we need that part of the yard for water run off. If I build a raised bed there part of our yard will flood. So now I have yet another plan - put it right by the back deck where the dog tore up the grass. I'll see what dh says about that. Hopefully that will be a good spot, my herb garden is already there.
I don't think he will. So far he has stayed out of everything that we've planted. I am worried about these darn squirels though! They eat everything! If I put food in my bird feeders it is all over the ground by the next day because of the squirels and they stole some of dhs corn. I need a bb gun!
