Hello, I am wondering what families are using for geography? Right now, we're using Spectrum (it was cheap and I needed something fast) but will be done with these 18 lessons by the first week of January. I want something hand-on and not just text. My son is 10. Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you.
I am using My Father's World Exploring Cultures and Countries. This is my second time using this curriculum.
I really like the Spectrum geography books. I alslo really like The Complete Book of Maps and Geography. We use them both. We are also using Which Way USA and Eat Your Way Around the USA. Eventually will do Top Secret Adventures with some kind of cooking. We have a stack of board games too, I'll post them in a bit. Oh and we Google and Google Earth a lot. Games: Where in the World is Carmen SanDiego? Where in the USA is Carmen SanDiego? (we also have the Where in Time game) National Geographic's On Assignment a vintage game called "Game of the States" another vintage game put out by Amway called Zoography
I've used Steck-Vaughn workbooks called "Maps, Globes and Graphs". There are 6 levels lettered A-F that cover the subject pretty well. Levels E and F together should do well for your son's age. We're using the 4th grade Social Studies from Christian Light right now, and after that we'll do Rod & Staff's 4th, both of which cover world geography, but a little differently.
We're using Trail Guide to World Geography. I like it because it has 3 different age levels available to use at once. We've paired it with its accompanying texts Cooking around the World and with Geography through Art [you do art projects that are connected to each continent].
We use Maps, Charts and Graphs by MCP http://www.christianbook.com/maps-charts-graphs-g-the-world/9780813621388/pd/621380?event=CF I also do mapping activities in Mystery of History
We've used Sheppard's Software (free website) and Galloping the Globe. GG was supposed to be our spine, but SS ended up so great that we mostly used it instead. We also used the National Geographic website and World Atlas website (mostly for report-writing).
Sheppard's is a great web site!!! We also used Around the World in 180 Days, but there's a bit of teacher-work involved with it! There was also a video serious I enjoyed, but can't remember the name of it right now. It was from PBS.
