Here is a recipe for sugar cookies our family loves. :D You can sprinkle sugar on them before baking or frost after baking. They also taste good baked plain, without sugar or frosting.

    Sugar Cookies
(Makes a HUGE batch, but they freeze well! I often make just half a recipe's worth, since my mixer can only handle that much at a time anyway.)

    12 cups flour
    2 teaspoons baking soda
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    3 teaspoons salt
    4 cups sugar
    1 cup shortening
1 cup butter (actually, I use butter for both the shortening and the butter, but this is the original recipe I'm giving you)
2 cups sour cream (16 oz.)
    6 eggs, beaten
    2 teaspoons vanilla

Sift dry ingredients together. Cream sugar, shortening and butter together, then add sour cream, eggs and vanilla and mix well. Gradually stir in flour mixture. Chill dough. Roll out (not too thin), cut out and bake cookies at 350 degrees until edges barely brown.

    Enjoy!

Definitely going to try them  !!Do you freeze the dough in rounds (like the cookie dough you can buy) or do you cook them and then freeze?

JimmieLu, are your cookies sometimes called Sugar Cakes? Are they big, round and soft? My grandpa used to make these cookies that were enormous, round, soft sugar cookies, but they were called Sugar Cakes.
We would see them at Pennsylvania Dutch festivals and farmers markets, too.

Sabrina, you can freeze the dough to roll out later (I hadn't thought to make them into rolls, like store bought dough - cool!). What I do is bake the cookies and then freeze most of them for later. That way they stay super fresh. I make them thick, so they are soft, not crunchy. I wonder if they are like Sugar Cakes? Boy, I need to buy some sour cream, I'm getting hungry for cookies! :D
