Hi all I am new around here (well I have poked and read post for a little bit). I was wondering what people do for high school unit studies. I have found a lot for younger kids but not much done for older kids. If I start to make up my own, any recommendations on what I should use. My sd wants to be a veternarian so I thought we might want to do something on animals or some such thing. Next year we are planning on having her join the local explorers post and I know I can use that too but does anyone have some other suggestions? Maureen

What year of highschooling are you talking about and what subject? or do you mean one that encompasses all subjects? I was never good at those cause MAth always lost out Lol!
I am just trying to find some stuff to do for electives for her (she will be doing 11th grade next year). We have the basics but she has to do a minimum of six classes to be eligible for the college program so I thought a couple of good unit studies might be the trick. I know I can get curriculums for things like home ecconomics but I am hoping to do something a little more fun for her.
So are you looking for something like Home Ec, Drawing and Painting, Sculpting, photography,band, Creative Writing, Office Assisant? Those are just a few I took in HS so am implimenting them in my teens classes, she is 10th this year, 9th for algerbra
we are way behind you, just starting 7th, but we do lots of unit studies. Also not sure what counts as the basics for you. Anyway, thought I'd share, you just never know.... right now we are doing ancient egypt and a sewing project. Later we will do computer studies, a week of cooking and child care (sending her to a friend of mine), jewelery design and making, vegetable gardening/food production project, landscaping the yard, the incas, atzecs and mayas. Also have you considered drama, music, or art?
The basics would be the standard electives, home ecconomics, basic art (she has done that), writting (since she hates that) and core courses (math, science, history, English). I like the idea of jewlery making, she might enjoy that. I was also hoping to do some more science type classes but since there does not seem to be alot out there I do not know where to begin for her. She will be doing Chemestry next year and then probably advanced biology or marine biology the following year. I think it is just hard for me since all we have done so far is from standard curriculums. thank you for all the suggestions. I really appreciate it.
Wow Karen, you sound like our home! HA< we are doing all of the above, except the incas, aztecs and mayans cause we already did them but our yard is being landscaped, by us, we are going to be planting our own vegies and you just gave me the idea to have her record from the tilling to the reaping! She can do diagrams and detailes on what we plant when and how long to germination, plus the other stuff... And then make it to the table with cooking and all that... She already does jewelery design on her own, last year she taught herself to do that, and I helped a bit so we called that one a class too! and Drama we have not had this year but she is buying herself a new keyboard, Kawasaki brand even, and going to be learning to play piano with that! If you can get your hands on Apoligia Science go with that! THey have CDROM version now and it is great! She reads, answeres questions , on computer, then I print up the tests to do and study work. And Donna Young helps with planning things out and keeping track!
Oh I so agree on Apologia science. That is what we are using for Biology. We do not use the cd, I did not even know there was one. Dh goes over the material with her twice a week to make sure she really understands it and he does the labs with her (or at least lays the stuff out for her). He also goes over the tests and her lab reports. Those books are so well layed out. I plan on using some of their stuff when dd gets a little older. The botany for elementary looks really great.
We have just started with apologia on the cd. dd really likes it. she says that she likes the video/animation features and the pronunciations on the cd. She does it all at the computer, so we only print the experiments and study guide + test. It is easy to navigate, and I hardly have top do anything, yay! Thanks for the encouragement t'mom. We are thinking of building a chicken coop and getting some chooks (aussie for chickens) as part of our landscaping too. mschickie, what about some computer studies, or electronics, or robotics, or web design?
Sd is not into computers unfortunately. She has no desire to do any typing or something like that. She has used most of the basic software already (excell, word, powerpoint) Her main interest is in horses and art but she does not want to do a drawing class. I ask for he input and get the standard teenage " I don't know". If I can not come up with something or she does not offe a suggestion I guess it will be the standard curriculum for next year. She will just have to settle for different stuff at co-op.
