Deena, you are not alone in finding history to interest your teenager. In MOH, the author writes letters at the beginning of her book addressed to each age group. I believe the one for the "older students" begins with a to-the-point acknowledgement that most kids that age hate history and that she didn't expect them to get all excited, but that she understood how they feel and hoped that they would find it tolerable at least  . Not sure if I said that just right, but it was something to that end.
Deena, have you been on the MOH discussion at Yahoo? They were a number of people on there who were using it with older kids, and I'm thinking they were talking about branching off on their own discussion. You might check into it. I think I could send you a PM with the e-mail address of the gal moderating if you want.
Hi Ladies! ell, I've been out of the loop lately and I'm embarassed to say why... I actually keep checking this strand and I didn't realize that it was on to a third and fourth page. I just spent the last half hour catching up on everything! I'm still somewhat new to all of this message board stuff. Just as a refresher - we are also doing sotw - ancients. We are just finishing up with Egypt. We did do the model of the Nile (using grass and pebbles) and it's growing like you wouldn't believe! A loving friend picked up the Ancient Egyptian Design coloring book (Dover) for us. Unfortunately a few of the pictures are uh, well...unusable for us. I can't let DS (who's 9) flip through it. So browse before you buy ) I found a cool website where you can type in your name and it will print it in Hieroglyphs for you. www.upenn.edu/musseum.com I apoliqize if someone already talked about this site - I was trying to catch up on all the posts pretty fast! Anyway - I am completely motivated to start a timeline now! Please keep the great suggestions coming - they are so helpful!
Hmmmm, For some reason I wasn't notified that there were more posts in this thread---usually I get an e-mail..... So, sorry Jackie and Shaina, I didn't know you replied. :? Jackie, I have not been to the MOH discussion on Yahoo. I would like the address if you can send it to me. Thanks! Shaina, Thanks for your suggestion. Hey, no worries about being confused. I was too when I first got back! Glad you're joining in, this history stuff is GREAT! We're having fun with our timeline stuff! Go ahead and ask questions if you have them, it doesn't matter if they've been asked before.....I know I ask questions more than once cuz I can't quite remember the answer, and I have no clue where we talked about it before!
Deena, try this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MysteryofHistory1/ The group for high school is: http:::groups.yahoo.com/group/MysteryofHistoryHS If those don't work for you, let me know and I'll see what I can do!
Hey, I know most (or all?) of us cannot afford a cruise, but this is pretty cool. It's a homeschool cruise, and the prices look quite decent, if I'm reading it right. It looks like a family of 4 can go for the price of one person normally! It's a Homeschool Cruise! It's like a convention, with presenters and speakers, and only homeschoolers on board! It's worth looking at and dreaming about anyway! Here's the site: http://www.homeschooladventures.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=hsas.hsas&imgaction=hsas Hope the link works....
Oh, how fun!!! No, it's not in our budget, and I'm curious what exactly the cost would be for more than four. Would it actually be double, since you need two rooms, or would it be one "couple" price, and one "family" price....... And did you see the speakers? Cathy Duffy, and Maggie Hogan. (Maggie Hogan is the publisher for MOH), Dinah Zike and (last of all!) Jim Weiss. He's such an excellent story teller! Well, not this year, I'm afraid! Sigh............
Hey ya'll I don't think I had posted this site as one I use too...... It has tons of neat things on it, but this page is one of my favorites because it has coloring pages to go along with our timelines and other need little graphic organizers......... http://www.tapestryofgrace.com/Year 1/Y1_writing.htm Deena, wowee .... the cruise looks neat  . Dh and I finally broke down 3 years ago and went on on since so many of our friends said we were missing out. I do like my *land feet* I have to admit. . I had so many girlfriends who said you don't feel a thing. Well, guess who was the oddball, and got so sea sick? Both of us, we don't know who was helping whom to get to the bathroom. Dh and I made a pact then that if we ever got off of this ship, it would be a long time before we did it again  A girlfriend and I were just talking about this and saying they need to have more of these conventions throughout the year instead of so many in summer. I feel like sometimes we have to change in *midstream* like I'm haivng to do this year and scramble to find a workable science curriculum. It makes it hard to put your hands on one if you didn't look for that at the convention, kwim? TinaTx
I've never been on a cruise, so if I ever DID go on one, that kind would be the best to go on---all those speakers would be very educational! I really do like the idea, but like Jackie, I'm wondering what the cost is for more than 4?! Not that we'd go, but we'd have 5---wonder how much it'd be then?! Tina, remind me NOT to go on a cruise with you!!! Even if I didn't get seasick, I can't handle that and tend to join right in---Yuck! I agree about having more conventions other times of the year---wish they would! Okay, I'm going to check out those sites some more.........
I KNOW DEENA!!!! We'll go together. That way we could get the one room, split the cost of the second, and put ALL THE KIDS IN IT!!!!! YEAH!!!!! (Never mind that'd be six kids in one room.....)
Jackie---YOU'RE ON!!! Wouldn't that be GREAT?!!! That's probably the only way we ever really could go! Should give that more thought for another year... How fun would that be?!!!
Linda Hobar now has her MOH website up and running. For anyone interested in the program, check it out! www.TheMysteryofHistory.com
Ok I havn't been on this board in ever such a long time Well I did have a baby 8 weeks ago so does that excuse me? This is such an intresting thread that I've read all 4 pages while my 3 year old and baby are napping- both at the same time! whoo hoo I can't wait till my 3 year old is old enough to start doing this stuff! Anyway thought I would post a site for those intrested in making time line figures, or just wanting the pictures. These are actualy paper dolls , remeber those cute little things you use to dress with paper clothes? These are famous people such as Alexander the Great, and Cleopatra. And if you want to drool, just foryourself there is even a Brad pitt paper doll! Warning *these are 'adult' paper dolls so as there are some bare topped ladies and such, you may want to look first without your kids. http://marilee.us/paperdolls3.html#Printadults Jo from Australia
Hey Jo, Welcome back!!! Good to hear from you! CONGRATULATIONS on your new little one!!! Hope all is going well---we will pray for your family adjustment time, or maybe things are going okay? I hope so! Thanks for the site. I don't have time to visit it now, but I will be doing so as soon as I get the chance!
maps of Ancient China I don't have the historical atlas...told DH tonight that I really needed to get one at the conference this summer (though I'm going to keep my open at Half-Price Books!!!) Anyway, I went to the library tonight to get one that had the Zhou dynasty in it because the kids are suppose to map it tomorrow. NO LUCK!!! Looked in both the kids' section and the adults'. Finally I gave up and came home. Did a web search, and found a good site that has the maps of the different dynasties. If anyone is interested here it is: http://www.artsmia.org/arts-of-asia/china/maps/shang-map.cfm
Wow Jackie, we're not there yet, but that looks like a great site! I saved it in my favorites, and will be looking into it more as we get closer to that point! Thankyou so much for sharing it! We were going well, then all of a sudden we got sick, then were gone for Thanksgiving vacation (to see my parents), and now we're "behind", although "behind" is relative. We are where we are, but we're not as far as you! How's that?!
Just found another promising site. It was posted on the MOH discussion. It's an on-line Bible Atlas!!! I've not looked at it in depth, but ANYTHING is better than what I have now (ie: nothing!!!).
