Hey, Did anyone watch this show this past Sunday night? They built a house for a family of THIRTEEN that lived in a 900 sf home in Alaska!!! The mom homeschools the kids and they seemed so nice. They showed homeschooling in a positive light, and built a class room for her to help have a place for schooling the kids. I was impressed with the positives, so thought I'd ask, and share that at least SOME positive things are coming through about homeschooling! Not that they dwelt on it, but it was just shown to be such a great thing for the mom to do, and they discussed how great the kids were, etc.

I'll try to see if I can find a link or something. We taped it, so may be able to send you a disc of it if you want.

Syele, It's on cable where you are? We don't have cable either, but it's on channel 4 here.

Too bad you missed it, it was kind of a breath of fresh air, after the negative stories about hsing I'd heard about lately!

Even with an antenna here all you get without Cable is PBS. It looks like I'm going to be moving to my mom's guest house.. And she has Cable.. so maybe I'll catch it on a rerun.

I saw it and I thought they were a great family. This was the first time I have seen a show that showed the postive life of homeschooling. It was great. Would love to see more shows like that.

Homeschool is becoming more popular around my town. When I had my garage sale I had 4 families of hs stop by, and no I did not know them. It was really neat to talk with them and here their sucess stories and how and why they are hs. I told one family about our co-op group and I hope they decide to come.
Ok sorry I have moved off topic.
The show was great and if you guys that missed it can get a copy I would say it is worth watching.

I just wanted to add that I grew up in Alaska and still visit every summer and the state and people overall have a VERY positive outlook on homeschool. They have a wonderful program there which awards money and computers to homeschooling families.

I wish I still lived there!

That was a great episode. If memory serves, they built the family their own schoolhouse and bought laptops for all the kids. I told DH that once we own our own home, we need a small schoolhouse of our own. I think that would really help our boys focus. You know, to actually have to get up and dressed and "go to school". And the pets wouldn't be running around their feet begging for attention ;)

I have to admit that the unschooler in me thought the school desks were a little funny. I would have prefferred a big table and a couple of sofas. :)

They were a fantasic family though.

I have three boys with three VERY different learning styles. One needs desks...lol. I'm not entirely sure about the third yet (he's only 18 months old).

Though I think that even my couch kid will need to spend a bit of time at a desk in high school to prep for college. I'd venture a guess that I'll have to actually teach him how to learn in a more traditional setting.
