For anyone who has used Hooked on Phonics, can you tell me......is this software that you run on your computer or is it DVDs that you play in a DVD player just like any other movie?

We use HOP. I bought the K and 1st grade sets back in 2003! All 4 of my kiddos have learned to read with HOP, love the program.
Ours is CDs (audio only which I really like), but I have heard the newer versions have DVDs, like movies to be played on a TV.

Ok, first make sure you do not buy the original HOP, the white case with cassettes.

They started doing levels/colors/grades after the original. The first ones came with cassette tapes. Then they came out with a cd version.. audio cd. SOME not all of the cd versions (look for deluxe if you want this feature) came with a cd-rom for the computer that is games, it does not work with windows 7 though, just an FYI. The newest version comes with dvds that play on your tv.

We are actually using the new DVDs with an older (cd) version, because the cd version has more books. I have to rearrange the order in which we watch the videos but it's not hard to do. The videos appeal to Reagan and then Cameron is hanging out watching them too :) He HATED listening to that womans voice on the cds, and it made him have a melt down everytime HOP came out to play. Now he is doing great and progressing amazingly well!
