We have no set amount of time for school. We don't have to count days or hours, so I focus on how much we get done instead of how long we work. How long we spend on school each day depends on how fast they work & which child we're talking about. Ds (kinder): Math - 1 page & flashcards daily, plus games 2 days a week Phonics/Reading - at least 2 pgs in ETC; reading to me from BTC, 100 Easy Lessons, a book, or Starfall; playing online Phonics/Reading games Those 2 subjects take less than 2 hours a day. Social Studies & Science depend on what projects we're doing that day & his interest level. It could be anywhere from 20 min to 2hours for each. DD (6th): Latin - 1 chap lasts a week, daily amount of time depends on how fast she does the translations English usually takes about 30 min Math - her least fave subject could take 30 min if she focuses & really works or hours if she fights, whines, and complains Art & Music depend on what she's doing that day - projects, music practice, or biography Geography - depends on what she's working on; she gets 2 weeks to do a chap in her Geography book & also does a study of each state individually History & Science - usually a few hours on each because she's writing books on each topic & doing projects for each topic Home Ec - depending on topic, sometimes just mixed in with daily life, sometimes 30-60 min a day focused on the topic Reading - she reads at least 1 hr a day & does a project on books for school to show comprehension It also depends on if you count educational shows/DVDs, educational games, field trips, read aloud time, etc. You could technically say that almost all of our waking hours are spent on school. If you only count the sit down work or only workbook/textbook work, it would be much less time.
My oldest starts around 8 and is usually finished around 12 or 12:30. My middle starts around 8:30 and is usually finished around 1 or 1:30. Now...both of them take about a 20 minute break around 10 or 10:30 to have a snack and short play time. Sometimes we'll go outside, sometimes they do jumping jacks to get the blood flowing. My middle likes doing jumping jacks, push ups, jog in place after each subject - it's his reward when he stays focussed.
My middle schooler and high schooler do between 5 and 8 hours of school a day. My 5th grader does between 2 and 4 hours of school a day.
Well, our situation is a little different. When we hs'd ds at home (5th grade until done), he did it in about 4 hours. At our little school, we start at 815 and officially end at 245, with a 45 min lunchbreak (and playtime) but unscheduled breaks for bathroom, snack, and a "between subjects when I don't have anything specific for you do to independently and I'm tied up with one of the other four" breaks for puzzle/playdoh/toys for the first grader. In practical terms, however, we just work until their moms come to get them... anywhere between 230 to 300 on a normal day.
We work for 4.5 hours, required by our state. Sometimes a little longer or shorter, but we have a schedule that works for us.
We work 4-5 hours but only because we are required to work a certain number of hours and I wouldn't get them all in otherwise.
Well, like many have said, the time it takes varies alot based on how quickly my oldest does his work. He is 2nd grade and each day has: 1 lesson in Horizon math, 2-4 pages in Lifepak Language arts, 2 pages in Explode the Code (almost done with book 3, and then will start 4), a book to read aloud to me, books or projects on our theme (currently farm, which is morffing to include insects, animals. harvest, apples, pumpkins etc... while still focusing on farming, LOL). Then he has a few other fun things added to our workboxes each day such as games (traditional or specific learning games), maze books (his very favorite thing in the world), once a week he does a lesson in a mapskills book, fun worksheets from online or books I have and whatever else we decide to toss in. On a good day he is done in about 2 hours, but he has been known to take much longer when he is distracted. Since we started workboxes it has been going smoother and faster. My Kindergartener it is more about keeping him busy and entertained so his brother can get his work done while not burning him out which is a hard ballance with this kiddo.
We work until they are finished with what I had planned for the day. We do take breaks whenever we need to and sometimes stop at 1pm when Babyboy gets here from preschool and start back at 2pm when he takes his nap. I guess an average would be 5 hours a day.
I do have "set" hours, because the rule is no TV or uneducational computer games during school time. So I had to establish what "school time" was. But even now, Phillip will ask "Is school out yet?" And what he's REALLY asking, is "Can I play ANYTHING on the computer yet?" Lol!!!
This is how we did it. One thing we found, though, is that when a child was particularly interested in a topic, the school-day would continue longer than average - but by their choice and not ours.
we don't have a set time to work, we start at 8:30 and when we are done with all of the work for that day we are done. Most of the time we finish around 2pm with breaks thought out the day.
No set time here either. We start at 8:00 and end whenever they are done. Usually ds done around 2:00 and dd 4:00 (her choice - she likes to read and reread)
Usually about 45 minutes in the morning, but he's only 4. We work till he's done. (Not counting reading, tv, field trips, etc.)
We have to have 5 hours of school time so we do those 5 hrs. most days but some days we finish earlier or later.
On an average, it takes about 4 hours to get through the lessons. Sometimes it takes longer and sometimes less time.
It takes about 3 hours for the 3rd grader to finish all of her work. The kindergartner is usually done in 1 hour, but comes back for science (which we do at the end, cuz it's fun!)
About 2 -2.5 hours of actual work with me on core subjects. Then they are on their own to do what they want. I will set out art supplies a couple times a week and they will do that for hours. They also like to play board games and pretend play with a store, teacher, post office, etc. Right now they are outside playing volleyball. I wonder what my neighbors think who don't know I HS. It was so cute this weekend. Some of their friends from the neighborhood came over and they all sat on the picnic table out front and played homeschool. They drug all my HS stuff outside  but it was so cute how could I say no, one of the girls was the principal  They must have been out there for 6 hours completed with phys. ed.
