I was just reading the Saxon Math thread, since I've been reading up on the different materials out there. I'm currently in a big, thick book of materials reviews by Mary Pride. How do you keep track of all there is to consider? I've begun writing down the things that sound good. My mind is no sponge, and I'm trying to read as much as I can before we formally homeschool.

I hear you, I have checked out the same book from the library and it was very overwhelming.

So, I too might need help on how to use the book

    best of luck

You don't. I'm sure there's lots of super stuff out there that I'm "missing". No one can do it all! You just have to go with what information you have. Later you hear about something from a friend or see something at a conference and think "OH!!! I wish I knew about that two years ago when...." But since you didn't, you go on. If you can use it now, fine. If not, fine.

I wasn't playing, was I Randa?! I think that book covered a jillion things. I can't take large blocks of time to sit and read this giant thing, either. Randa, you probably want to make the best informed choice you can, just like I do. I feel the need to finish this monster, so I guess I'll just do my best.
I did disagree with her review of Hooked on Phonics. No, you can't sit a four year old down by herself with this, but why would you want to? Plus there's all kinds of things you can do with the words. I used that with my son when he was two or three, and he was reading when he entered kindergarten. I'm now using it with my three year old daughter. I like it alot. Plus, I think Mary reviewed the old HOP. There's a new one written for kids.
I had to give up on the 'how to' homeschool books- there's too many and I just can't absorb it all.

It's all about coming across the information at the right time. :D You need to figure out specifically where you are and what you need. Now...those will change as you skim books but...I will usually grab a bunch of books and end up just flipping through most of them and saying...uh hum...but then you will get that one that hits you at the right time and place. That's the one you read and gain from.

IMO Mary Pride's books are a great resource to *check with* but...to sit down and read - oh please. That would like sitting down with a Rainbow Resources catalog and trying to figure out what you wanted to buy. Mind over load!!!!

If you are looking for Phonics then just start searching for Phonics. One person's opinion is not the same as anothers. Phonics around here came real easy and we love the JumpStart computer softwares. Between Jumpstart Kindergarten and Jumpstart Phonics - whew! The rest we did by reading signs out and about. Ok don't get me wrong we did other things but...they were easy things. Reading, playing silly games with the alphabet, whate letter do you think dog starts with etc...

If you flip through a book 3 times and it doesn't do anything for you then get another one - shesh! Homeschooling books are a dime a dozen - just check the library. :D
