I know movies arn't "news" but...

Did anyone see RV?

I thought it was funny but the wole portrait of homeschoolers seemed really sterotypical. Although They did have the boy starting college early...

I just wondered what others thought.

 

Was the RV family a homeschooling one?? Was it portrayed in a POSITIVE way? We dont go to the movies---I'd hate to wait till DVD!

 

aWelll... It was a silly movie remenicient of Chevy Chase in Vacation. It was meant to be over the top so I tried to keep that in mind.

I had a mixed reaction to the whole portrayal. That's why I was curious about other's reactions.

The main family didn't Homeschool but it's a big theme through the whole movie. On their trip thay run into a HS family that lives permanently in their RV. They are portrayed as somewhat socially backward weird hicks. On the other hand the HS family was very happy and cheerful (when no one else was), it was mentioned how they were smart (kids skipped grades), they were also very loving and honest and loyal to their family and friends.

The main family the movie was about was totally freaked out by them. Ran away from them in fact(more than once). In the end they didn't seem to have a problem with it but still said they were weird in one of Robin Williams speeches.

It was almost like the messege was that homeschoolers may be super weird and backwards but we may have something better than everyone else in spite of that?


As far as it being good for families to watch.. most movies are worse but it has some bad language, loads of toilet humor and a couple of scenes with dangerous stuff going on (like Robin Williams climbing around the outside of moving vehicles)... Sami saw the movie... and hid her eyes twice cause she said it was scary. Somehow she didn't hear the bad words but did catch someone said "stupid" which Sami considers a bad word and she complained to me about it.

 

That movie sounds like my family and me. We live in a RV and homeschool think I will have to go see it.

 

Kris, did y ou go see it? If you did I would be interested in your view too! I have not seen it yet, will wait for the dvd to come out I guess.

 

I love any movie with Robin Williams I can't wait to get the DVD.

 

I loved this movie and so did my 2 girls (ages 8 and 10).
I was not offended at all regarding the way they portray the homeschooling family.
I think that the reason why Robin Williams family in the movie thought they were weird is because the family spent so much time together and they liked it that way. Robin was trying to get his family to go on a family trip together that didn't involve all of them doing seperate activites ( one at the spa, one surfing, one laying out by to the pool).
In the end of the movie they all realize that the homeschooling family wasn't all that weird after all. But they still wounldn't spend that much time with them, they don't like people too much I think.

 

Oh I did get to go see it. It was great my dd's loved it and it is us in a basket right down to the rv. Just like ours.

 

I saw the DVD at walmart today. My friend who was with me said it was a stupid ovie. *sigh* I liked it.

 

oh cool, maybe I will get myself the dvd for my birthday! wheee hooo!

 

We watched this last night and really enjoyed it. I did not think it showed homeschoolers in a bad light at all. On the contrary, I think it showed that homeschoolers get a different education but it is an envious education. It portrayed the kids as smart and desirable. It also portrayed the family as close knit because they were together all the time. The couple was truly in love and their love showed. I also felt that the movie was putting the importance on family and being together. The family may have appeared to be socially misfit at first, but everyone is socially misfit to someone. It just went to show that first impressions and judgements are not always accurate.

 

We rented the movie today at blockbluster and are going to watch it tonight after dinner. I have heard it is REALLY funny and the kids will love it! I can't wait to see it.

 

Ok...well, we saw the movie last night. My kids thought it was funny, but were'nt crazy over it. It was a "silly" movie, I thought, but in the end the family learned a valuable lesson about the importance of family.

As far as the protrayal of the homeschooling family. I didn't think it was the "homeschooling" that made this family a little wacky! It was just who they were...nothing to do with the homeschooling, IMHO.

Overall, it was ok...but probably wouldn't be one I'd buy or maybe even rent again (uless the kids really wanted to)

Has anyone ever seen a movie or TV show that has portrayed Homeschool Families in a good light??? Not just "NOT" shown them in a bad light. But actually made them "Positive"???

Seriously, because I would like to know...
I have never seen it.

I mean, even over the last year or so, with the likes of "Wife Swap", showing homeschoolers as freaks.... it just breaks my heart....

Leslie, I felt the same way about RV. We live in RV but not like that.

 

hmm, ya, I have but I don't remember what it was. I have actually watched that tv show "Wife Swap" before because it had home schools on it> a couple times. They sometimes show them as so smart and wise parents to home school, yet still the other 'mom' sends them off to public school, the coolest part is that the older kids get on the lady for trying to change thier lives in that way and one time a teen boy explained home school in such a true sence, and why he enjoyed it. Almost brought tears to my eyes!
The kind of think I would hope MY kids would say if confronted.

 

We watched RV this weekend. Laughed ourselves silly! I thought the homeschoolers were hysterically funny and at first I was a little miffed. But as the plot unfolded, I loved them. They really loved each other and were committed to family.

I think it was more poking fun at southerners than homeschoolers. THAT I didn't like! lol, but then I'm used to it.

In Boston, people actually had the nerve to glance down at my feet when they found I was from Kentucky.

 

Well you should see what they do to us, when they hear we homeschool, from the south in a RV so don't feel bad.
