I am SO excited!!!! We are FINALLY enjoying homeschool again.. I was so burned out and ready to throw in the towel.. I've found that planning and structure has played a HUGE part in making our school days work well for us.. My girls seem happy and I'm BEYOND happy!! I see them catching things and learning and working hard. Dd9 is excited to start doing research.. We have started doing journaling.. I give them a topic and they write about it.. Usually it's something silly, like today I had my 9 year old write about what she would do if she were a catapillar.. It was so cute!! She couldn't wait to read it to me.. She said if she were a catapillar she would wake up to the big blue sky above and would eat a HUGE cupcake for lunch and when it was time for bed she would cover up with a leaf and go to sleep.. She was more descriptive than that, using LOTS of adjectives.. I was surprised at how descriptive she actually was.. They LOVE journal time.. We only do it twice a week.. I don't look at spelling or handwriting.. I just want them to be creative.. I can't believe how much they have learned in just the last 2 weeks alone.. It AMAZES me! I've been able to pinpoint things that need to be worked on and schedule it in.. All it took was some organization and consistancy..

    Awesome!!

Have you set any kind of a schedule? I am really not a schedule follower, but Reagan is really bucking school lately and I know for kids like him a schedules are actually really important.

We don't have a schedule really. They just know that they have school every day and that it's all in their notebooks and mom WILL check EVERY SINGLE DAY to make sure it's done.. DD12 learned the hard way.. She had her "back porch painted red" if ya know what I mean along with LOTS of make up work for trying to hide her work from me thinking I wouldn't notice it was missing.. Rule is NOTHING comes out of the notebook unless I take it out.. We have a notebookbook with dividers that I fix up every week with the weeks lessons.. I can't "plan" farther than a week ahead at a time. It just works better that way.. AND if we need to redo something we don't have to adjust everything to get it done.. Next week we are starting a new science book with Dd9.. Apologia anatomy!!!! We are ALL excited! I'm PLANNING on using Fridays as our project/experiment day and both girls will do their stuff together. maybe both will get something from the other's science curriculum.. And besides it's FUN and breaks the monotony!! We are planning a visit to the local museum next week to learn a little about history of our town during their black history month exhibit.. the girls LOVE museums..

I just really think that taking the planning and making it into small sessions of a week long works REALLY well for us.. I do start dreading it about this time of the week because I know it's coming up again, but I'll eventually figure out a system to make it go more smoothly.. :) I'm just really pleased with myself for sticking with it.. I feel so accomplished... I'm SO greatful for all of the posts that helped me get the ball rolling.. You guys are AWESOME!!!

I really think we may move to a "binder" system. I keep thinking of workboxes, but 1 they take too much space and 2 I'm lazy and won't want to fill them every day.

I think I need to go read those posts I wrote to you and maybe take my own advice a little more. ;)

That what ultimately worked for us too is the weekly planning. I have an over all plan but dont refer to it much, I just look at last week ,, see what we did and where I want us to be the end of the week. I actually write it up on Monday at 5 am, or so lol. Then as I am fresh in looking ahead of ds work I can do the instructing as needed part easier.
Even with the stress of MRI,s Dentist apts, and PT I am finding we are only one week off my main plan, and that gave us three weeks to play with in the end so yeah! I am glad you posted that you re enjoying it again I think that is half the battle!

Well, today we hit a bump in the road.. My girls are finishing up their schoolwork that they didn't do YESTERDAY.. I don't know why I didn't check them yesterday but I didn't.. It's almost 7 on a Friday night and they are at the kitchen table.. I sorta feel bad, but at the same time, let em sneak by once and you may as well hang it all up.. This mama isn't playing games ANYMORE.. So after two swats each they are quietly working to finish.. And I'm deciding what we will be working on next week.. Gonna be a rough week as we have family coming in and some personal issues to get resolved.. :/ But that's life right?? lol!! It's still ALL GOOD! I've figured out a system that works and I'm sticking to it.. Have a GREAT weekend all..

Good job, nip it in the bud!!

Take it a little light, find things they can do independently so you are freed up some, but check it every day!
