I just have to shout/scream/crow/etc.... we are hosting Jessica Hulcy! If any of you are close enough and want to make the drive...she is AWESOME! Details can be found at www.hsiz.org Yipeee!
Jessica Hulcy is Co-author of KONOS Character Curriculum. When Jessica and her husband Wade began homeschooling in 1981, there was nothing but textbook and workbook curriculum available. Recognizing the wiggle in all children and believing there was more to true education, Jessica providentially joined with her friend, Carole Thaxton, in co-authoring KONOS Character Curriculum. Jessica has been writing and speaking to homeschoolers around the nation ever since. Both she and her husband, Wade, are so committed to training the next generation of homeschoolers that they have started a new business Homeschool Mentor.com which is a online video that walks veterans and newbies through homeschooling using hands-on methods. Jessica is a dynamic speaker that will inspire you to have a great year with tons of fun and knowledge easily put into your children's head. You won't want to miss this event! http://www.konos.com/
I've heard about KONOs, I just didn't know her name, or that she went with it. That's really cool, thanks for the info.! What does it mean that you are hosting her?
We are hosting her meaning we are the ones coordinating everything and paying her bill. Admission fees will off set all the expenses, or at least that is what we pray for.
I'm close enough. It's not far from where I live at all. When is it. I read the article but am not retaining much info this evening. I think I need to go to bed. LOL.
I'd love to come hear her. Better yet, we'd love to go on one of her homeschool trips for highschoolers and parents to Europe!
Now that is my speed! Have you ever been to Europe? I know you have travelled but I wasn't sure how extensively. I went to Europe with my mom, my senior year in high school. It was so awesome! I would love to take my kids.
Yes, our daughter researched the KONOS site, and I called the phone number listed there and actually talked with the very person of Jessica Hulcy! She sounded so sweet and kind and knowledgeable and leader-like, all wrapped up into one amazing person! But her health is giving her some problems, so the trip for next spring (2008) looks like it is being cancelled. She hopes to lead one again, though--maybe the following year, when our twins would be seniors. Let's hope and pray that she'll be better soon--both for her sake and for the sake of all the homeschoolers whom she blesses! Deena, a little bit later, after I work with my teens on their schoolwork, I'll see if I can get more info. for you. Now THAT would be a riot if a bunch of us from this spot could tour Rome and Paris together, wouldn't it????!!! It's also great incentive for the kids to save their money instead of buying expensive shoes and clothes. Goodwill, here we come!
Here's a link to a quick peek at a past tour: http://www.konos.com/highschool/tours.htm When I told Mrs. Hulcey that we were nearing the end of Linda Hobar's "MOH," Vol. II, she suggested studying the second vol of KONOS' History of the World. I tried to compare MOH and HOW, using the KONOS on-line site, and it looks like the KONOS HOW might include a little more concentrated look at China. There would be a lot of over-lap from what we have already studied, I'm sure, but using that book might be a requirement for going on the trip. Happy hoping, everybody!
Wow, how fun that would be! It may be significantly more than that cost though, so for us that'd be VERY expensive!
Expense would definitely be a major factor, but why might it be significantly higher? Because of inflation? A person we visited with who is familiar with the tours says the price includes basically everything, including two meals a day. It looks like it's a 13-day tour; so the timing of it, date-wise, would have to fit into the farming schedule. It's a wild and wonderful thought--maybe unrealistic, but fun to think about!
