This was a speech that he delivered at the University of Texas at Austin several years ago. It was later published in a newspaper titled The Sun.
I placed it in this section of the board since it did appear in the paper.
I thought I would link this now because of the conversation going on under the topic : WHAT'S BEST AND WHY. I did write alittle about John Taylor Gatto under that topic, but I wanted to share this with you all now because I believe this might help some people understand were some homeschoolers (me personally, I am not speaking for EVERY homeschooler) are coming from as far as views on public schooling. I think Mr. Gatto presented this view very well, IMHO.

Thank you, NOW I remember who he is! You mentioned two books he had written. We had one of them from the library and it was...enlightening...to say the least!

I really like Gatto and have gained a lot from reading his works.

One thing though, is that he never out and out becomes a proponet of homeschooling. An example would be in this article where he offers Sweden as an example of "good" schooling. Sweden is very much a national childcare country. They make childcare very affordable so parents are available to be a productive part of the work force. IMO the children are as much wards of the state as of their parents. Not one of my favorite plans.

But overall everything Gatto wrote is eye-opening and enlightning.

    Thanks for sharing the article!!
