Hubby and I are looking to buy Kindles for books, textbooks ect. We do not want another computer so I am thinking that the Fire is not for us. I am looking at the ones with eink.

I need advice, tips, suggestions, recommendations. I REALLY don't want to buy the wrong ones!

I LOVE my regular Kindle (even more than I love my Fire). It's easy to read and easy on my eyes. It's very light, too.

But I would absolutely hate trying to navigate a textbook on it. It's very linear-friendly, but not good for flipping back and forth to find/review information.

So as far as regular reading goes you like the regular one. If you are reading and want to go to a particular chapter can you or do you need to go page by page?

You can go to a particular chapter. It's not a quick thing, but it's not hard, either. You have to pull up the menu, hit "go to," then choose "table of contents," then hit the down arrow until you get to the chapter you want. After that, though, you go page-by-page within the chapter.

The ones with the touch screen might work differently, but the only other experience I have is with my Fire, and I don't read on it (too weighty and the "ink" is hard on the eyes).

But for regular books, I love my Kindle. I carry it in my purse at all times. Nothing in this world will ever be as good as a paper book, but Kindle tops my list of acceptable substitutes.

I love the idea of Kindle, but I've gone through two in a matter of months. The screen would just looked cracked after a while, and be unusable. I googled it and found it's common problem

We actually just got the Nook HD +. The reason we did that one is because we could not only get the books from Barnes and Noble but with the Kindle Android app we can get books from Amazon and with the overdrive app we can check ebooks out of our library. I have not had any issues with reading on it either.

We bought both of the girls a Kindle Fire HD this past Christmas. Decided to forgo the typical clothes, toys and stocking stuffers and just get them each a kindle and a couple smaller items like a box of chocolate etc.

They love them. They can download a few games, and little apps etc. They get free books. Due to the other reading they have done with Series like Percy Jackson, and their interest in Thor and other movies, I was very pleased to see a steady stream of free classics being downloaded from the free books. They are reading all sorts of books about Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology. They read some Manga type comics these days and will likely hit the Asian mythology as well.

I give them each a little money to spend on downloads every so often and they get a book or a music album.

Nice thing is that once it is purchased, it stays "in the cloud" and can be accessed from all out devices. They get to use each others downloads.

Amazon prime includes a library of streaming movies and tv shows similar to Netflix offerings. Amazon prime also includes a book or two a month of top sellers as a free library lending program.

Be careful with on click purchasing. I turn it on and off as needed in the main amazon account. I also keep the internet browser password locked on the kindles.

THey make car travel great. They can entertain themselves and listen to music.

We still use the library extensively but the kindles have been a great hit. We live rural and are big amazon.com buyers anyway so prime at 80.00 a year was already a normal expence for us.

THey give my kids a similar experience to having a smart phone without the texting and phone features. There are some many useful android apps it is crazy. The kindle fire HD has a screen like a little jewel. It is so sharp and bright and colorful. These are really like a laptop replacement in terms of entertainment purposes.

I had the old kindle keyboard. It recently broke (on a fishing trip LOL) but I loved it. We also have a Kindle Fire (1st gen).

Honestly, I'm torn on whether to replace the broken one with another eink or a fire... Navigation within a book is MUCH easier on a fire than the Kindle keyboard... But I can't speak to the newer kindle eink readers...
