I have never read a single Nancy Drew book (old or new), nor do I have girls to encourage to read them, but I thought this was interesting. Kind of makes me want to read them. http://sharperiron.org/article/nancy-drew-and-true-womanhood
This was a very interesting read. I grew up with tons of Nancy, and since I was a 50s kid, they were definitely the pre-70s "with an amorphous Ned" ones. I read a review in Rainbow Resources huge catalog, written by one of the children, I believe, who apparently did not know that Nancy has been written for decades and decades longer than she thought. I emailed her and told her that "my" Nancy drove a little blue roadster not a red sportscar, and things like cellphones (or sometimes even a landline) and GPS couldn't be used to either commit or solve the crimes because they didn't exist yet, or didn't exist in the location Nancy was working in at the time. Things like "he couldn't have done it because the train doesn't run until two hours later" and so on, figure into some of the stories. DO find some of these oldies and enjoy!!!
I think it's time to read these. I know, I know, I'm (something something) years old and have never read Nancy Drew. Now my curiosity is piqued and I'm looking for them at the library next week. Thanks for sharing that article!
