With the exception of a cook-out, I've actually accomplished a full week of home-cooked, everyone-around-the-table dinners (a big accomplishment for disorganized, distracted me!!) and now all I've got left on hand until I get to the store are frozen hamburger patties. After the cook-out, I'd like to do more than just "burgers" for dinner. Does anyone know of a way to jazz them up? I mean, they're basically ground beef, right? Could they be baked in a casserole with some other add-ins to make an interesting dish? I haven't had any luck finding anything online. Any input would be appreciated!!
For hamburger patties - I'd make "salibury steak" with them. Now...I can't have wheat/barley/rye so I cant' use canned soup products - but you could substitute that if you'd rather. I WOULD... Pan fry the burgers - and remove when about "medium". Remove and set aside with foil over to keep warm. Add 10 oz button mushrooms, sliced. (I'd also add onion too)... Then, after they are soft I'd add 1 cup water that has had a beef boullion cube melted in it (Or 1 Cup beef broth) and 1 cup sour cream - mixed really well. Add to the pan and mix well, stirr until thickened and add the burgers back and coat with the gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes Okay...now I'm hungry!
I dont' like hamburgers . . . So when we have hamburger meat, we usually make spaghetti or something like that. However, that can get old, so here is what i do if I have some hamburger laying around. Here is a fave of mine: Shepherd's pie: You can thaw the patties and crumble them into a pan to cook the meat. WHile you are doing this, make mashed potatoes. When the meat is done, put it in a casserole dish, layer some fave veggies on top (we do peas, corn, and carrots - if frozed, then thaw them a bit in the microwave first) then spread the potatoes on top of all of it. Put a small pat of butter on top, use pepper too if you like, then pop it in the oven for about 15- 20 minutes. Serve with warm rolls or cornbread!
Thank you! All of these ideas sound so good, I'll eventually try them all. Today, I went with the salisbury steak idea. The moment I saw Krista's post, I knew that's what was in the back of my head that I couldn't think of. Since I had cream of mushroom soup in the cupboard, I thought I'd google "salisbury steak" and "cream of mushroom soup". I found a simple recipe that called for ketchup & worcestershire sauce mixed into the soup. It seemed interesting, easy, and used ingredients I had on hand. I don't know how it'll turn out--it's in the oven now. (All this fuss and hubby just called to say he's going fishing!! ) Krista, regarding food allergies, maybe you could give me some more suggestions. Our little neighbor girl, who plays alot with my kids, was just discovered to have several major food allergies. I can't remember them all, but the big one is corn products and the other is wheat. I'd like to be able to accomodate her so the kids can still invite her over for lunch, dinner or parties. I know there's alot of sites online, but which ones do you find the best? Any other suggestions? I've never really had to think about these issues before.
ohhhhh make salsbury steak. Ok I usually mix in some bread crumbs and seasoning but since yours are formed you can defrost them, and dredge them in seasoned flour (salt, pepper, garlic powder and or onion powder) and cook them, when they are brown then set them aside and make a gravy (if there is not enough fat, add some butter or oil or a combo of both, add some flour and beef boulion and water after the flour and butter make a paste, --- if you have a gravy mix or canned gravy use that--- then add the patties and simmer on low) Cook some rice or noodles and serve your patties and brown gravy on top. I usually serve with green beans.
also you can add in a beefy onion soup mix if your family likes onion gravy (but I found out mine doesn't)/.
I have another great recipe you can try sometime. I lay my patties in the bottom of a 13x9 baking pan and cover with sliced potatoes, green peppers, and onions. I cover with foil and bake at 450 until the meat is done. Makes the meat sooooo good! Tina
Well...in my signature is a link to my blog...there's recipes there . ALSO, on my blog are links to several other recipe blogs geared towards allergies. I have a friend who's daughter has several allergies - I'll find out what site she goes to. I know it has recipes for allergies. A lot of my recipes call for milk b/c so far I don't have any dairy issues...so if she's allergic to milk you can sub soy or rice milk.
Tina.. boy that sounds wonderful I need to try that one and try it soons sounds like something my family would like..
