Jackie, These look really interesting! I noticed that the Government is only a 1 semester, 1/2 credit course. So do we need more than that for a senior, I wonder? My oldest ds will be a senior next year, and I was trying to find a government course, but I thought they had to be a full year. I wonder what to do the rest of the year that he is not doing government?

My main focus is for my high schooler. I want to make sure I will be able to making it challenging enough of a course to count for high school level. I don't want her to feel I've gotten her some babyish book. On the other hand, I do have a DD who will be in 3rd grade so I would love to use it for her as well. I'm really liking the MOH. I've read some about it but can't really see if they cover secular subjects while they're covering biblical history. Plus they only have Vol. 1 & 2 out. Did you do both vols. in one year? I'm really interested in the 3rd volume but it won't be out until the end of the year it looks like.

I looked at the 'NotGrass' all encompassing one. It looks interesting as well. My only problem with it is, it is supposed to count as an english course as well but the most I see is 'grammar points' and reading. There might be more to it for English but its all I could see in the samples. THey don't even have to practice anything with the grammar points. I like all the history info though...

re governmetn 12th, that may be a good idea for me too because 12th gives her a chance to forget teh Life paks government lessons from grade 8 and 9! , lol they both taught her about government, she knows the three main branches so well I am having her make a poster board for a project about it!
I will send a pic of her white board one if anyone wants to see that, but I want a neat one to keep

Okay it looks totally boring to me Lol!

not sure if that worked, but what if I took many books like the ones here and had her read, then made my own questions up and tests etc?
    Would that work?

That's basically what I did this year. I made a list of american history events I wanted us to cover (explorers, colonialization, american revolution, constitution, westward expansion, etc...) and then ordered books from the library. I always OVER ordered so she could pick and choose. Like I ordered 20 books on american revolution and she could pick the ones that looked most interesting and read them. Then she wrote me a little report (usually front and back of a paper). I reviewed it, questioned her verbally on several things I thought were inportant to know and then we moved on to the next topic. If she hadn't learned everything I was questioning her on, I had her go back and learn about those things and add the info to her report. Like I said, we wing it here. But giving my DD some 'free reign' in choosing books and verbal tests helps her see it as more enjoyable.

MOH does a good job covering the secular history, too. Each volume is designed for one year, but that's not in stone, especially when dealing with the younger ones. We took two years to go through Vol. I, but are doing Vol. II in just one year. That's becaue Rachael is part of an MOH co-op. They were willing to let my younger two join, too, but everyone else were girls ages 12-15, and I felt my younger two would really change the dynamics in a negative way. But we're still doing all the reading together at home, so I have to stay on the same schedule as the co-op.

Anyway, for the first time (after MOH I), I have an understanding about what happened between the Old and New Testaments, I know that King Tut wasn't the only king of Egypt (and I can name several of those other ones!!!), I know that the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire were not the same thing, and I now know that Julius Ceasar and Ceasar Augustus were NOT the same person! And I understand how Cleopatra was Greek, rather than Egyptian and exactly WHO Herod the Great was!

artsygirl thats waht Iw as thinking, yep, I could teach her the lessons in the areas I think she needs me to point out the things... I personally hated learning about renesance and that but I loved it when the teacher let me do a report that included the dress designs etc, what clothing was like. My dd wants to design either clothes or homes so these areas would be interesting in History to her too.
I could have her research them as side project and do a report on costs and on reasons for the styles they had. If they were efficiency or what. Economy could be included in that as well....
History is probably a subject I would teach in school if I were an outside teacher because there is so much scope for imagination in it!

Jackie I learned about those from Videos husband rented. We watched about teh Ceasars for like what seemed forever, he chose them for educational content and it was fun learning who was whom and what they really were living like and the way they belived and treated one another.
he rented via Net Flix so check thier educational things out too!

cool artsygirl, has she done anything for art at home that helps with that? My dd created her own line of paper dolls, though she only makes them and designs them never really played wiht them being the only girl..
she lays them out and shows them off as if it were a fashion show though. They are way cute too!

She also began designing clothes for barbies a while back..

She is more into graphic design, draws art all the time. Cuts furniture out of mags and puts them in her journals. She is a great journal maker as well. Draws clothing designs in them. I find it funny that she always draws wild dresses but never wears dresses! lol

    ha:lol:

    It's a typo, that's what it is.

I'm AN altered artist. A collage paper artist. I alter things, canvases, books, boxes. I make artist trading cards as well, which is a small form of art (you probably can see some on my blog.) Really, I just love to do art. Painting, stamping, scrapbooking too, although not as much of that lately.

What kind of art do you all do?

    Well thanks.

I just have an obsession to do art. I'm excited. We're finally fixing up the basement (if we ever finish clearing out the junk) and we're going to move my art room down there. Then get a table for this dining room I took over for the art room years ago. I'll have more room down there and I can start selling art again. Plus I'll be more organized. That is a problem with my art room. Too much stuff, not enough room!
