I just saw a cover for Newsweek, and one of the teaser headlines is "Are Homeschoolers Out Of Their Minds?".... anyone know what that's about?
Just googled it, but can't get any clue what it's about. Now I'm going to have to buy the mag or it's going to drive me crazy not knowing. lol
I thought it was a fine article until the end. It's bad journalism to explained why she felt it wouldn't work for "her" family. To be quite honest, it sounded to me as if she was trying to convince herself. I also liked the fact that it seemed to center around SECULAR homeschoolers. There's such a steriotype of hs'ers as Bible-thumping, dresses-and-long-hair only ultra-conservatives. Because they were emphasizing secular, it went totally against that.
The title of that article didn't match the headline on the cover of Newsweek [the one that's due out the first week of Feb.]. I wonder if it will be that article or something different.
I was surprised that the article painted such a positive view of home schooling. I agree it went against the stereotype with the secular model. I also agree with the weak ending. The article also hinted at the the stereotypical negatives of home schooling 'overly sheltered', socially crippled, to attached to their parents, etc. The article would have been better if it focused on a family with both younger and older children as the issues are quiet different.
Overall, I thought it was a good article. I think it can get parents thinking about both sides of the equation, which is what we should do.
