One more reason to homeschool

This isn't a homeschool news item as much as it is a Public School story, but it is one more reason for me to add to my "Why I homeschool" list. One of our local news stations ran a story on juvenile sex offenders in school. This is something I would never have thought about. I can't post links yet, but the story can be summed up by quoting just one line:

"Dozens of juvenile sex offenders go unnoticed by students and parents at local schools -- because they simply don't know."

Parents, Students Unaware Of Juvenile Sex Offenders In Schools

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State law prohibits sex offenders from living with 1,000 feet of a school, but what about sex offenders that are still going to school?

In Fairfield County, sheriff's officials said 14- to 18-year-olds are responsible for nine rapes and four counts of gross sexual imposition in 2007, NBC 4's Marcus Thorpe reported.

In Franklin County, the sheriff's office said there are 41 juvenile sex offenders.

Dozens of juvenile sex offenders go unnoticed by students and parents at local schools -- because they simply don't know.

"I was shocked. (I) never heard anything about it," said Bethany Dukat, a parent.

Another parent, Colleen Mason, said, "Any other caring parent would love to hear about something like that so we can tell our children what to look out for."

But when NBC 4 told parents that a sex offender finished the school year at their child's middle school, they were shocked.

"I have not heard about that until today, so I'm surprised. (I) don't think they have done enough to let us know because I didn't know," Mason said.

Columbus City School officials said they might not even know about the sex offenders.

"We wouldn't know how many were in our schools because we are only notified if a court or probation officer told us. There could be students in our schools that we are unaware of," said Jeff Warner of Columbus City Schools. "We knew we had them in our schools. We just wouldn't necessarily know who they are."

NBC 4 obtained an e-mail sent to Columbus City Schools' safety and security Director Steve McElroy in July 2007.

"He wasn't aware of that e-mail," Warner said. "I checked with him specifically."

The e-mail, in part, claimed that in the juvenile court system, 11 schools had a total of 17 students with sexual offenses enrolled at the end of the 2006 school year.

Over a three-week stretch, NBC 4 worked with the juvenile court system and tried to contact the Columbus City School District on their policy and notification plan, but discovered that there doesn't seem to be much communication between schools and the court system -- yet.

Thorpe asked Warner, "Would you reach out to the court system? Would you like to know?"

"We've made contact and asked them to help define a process that we might use so we are made aware of the situations," Warner said.

Thorpe asked, "When did you make contact?"

"Since you and I have been talking," Warner said.

Legally, the school district can't release individual information on any specific student to other parents.

But by early 2008, certain juvenile sex offender records will be public information, as part of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act Law and Ohio Senate Bill 10. Many juvenile sex offenders photos and information will be listed on the attorney general's eSORN Web site.

Senate Bill 10 -- which enforces the Adam Walsh Act -- is not getting through without a fight.

What kills me is that an elementary age kid can get charged with sexual assault for hugging another kid but a teacher can have sex with a student and be allowed to just resign and go to another district to do the same thing.

Sorry that was not about this but it brought that fact to mind.

Ps are so screwed up there is just no hope for them.

It's more common than you can imagine. Trust me - I teach in a high school. We have a lot of kids of restricted travel - we have to escort them EVERYWHERE!! It's really hard to imagine...
