I used Calvert for 1st grade, but I'm still on the fence about using it for 2nd. I had a pill of a time working with the teacher's manual and sifting through all of the scripted stuff. I am going crossed eyed reviewing catalogs, but I'm sure I can put together a good program. I love Rod & Staff among other things that I don't have time to share at this moment. Picking a math program is driving me insane. I'm leaning towards Calvert math b/c you have access to counselors for help. Not cheap though. TinaTx, don't feel like to have to write too much since you graciously emailed me tons of input in May about this, but if you can offer any new tidbits of wisdom, by all means speak up. (LOL!) And anyone else here too. Share the good, bad, and ugly about Calvert. I need to make up my mind SOON! Have a great day everyone!

I've tried Calvert's third grade history and the math. I didn't like the history, the student math book was good. The teacher's manuals were a sticking point with me. Too much flipping; I need everything organized and want to open up my book and begin. So, I returned to Saxon math; big teacher's manual but each lesson is complete. No flipping, the lesson is scripted and then the answers are at the end. The student book is the same way, each lesson and all worksheets are one place. Not trying to sell you on Saxon here though. Lots of people love it and lots of people don't.
Try not to stress too much over your decision. Lots of people love different parts of different programs. Switching is more common as the years go by. Just as using different LA and Math programs are. Homeschooling the first year is a learning experience for the mom as well as the child. Go with your heart. :)

    Tammy,
Thanks for the reply. This will be my third yr homeschooling (not my first). I really want to pick and stick with something b/c all of the switching allows for gaps, which I don't want. My problem is choosing btwn so much great stuff available. It's maddening. I think Calvert can probably be quite a relief from all the decision making b/c they've already done all the work of testing and choosing the curriculum. On the flip side, though, it's still *their* selection of stuff and not mine. I think the one major plus of Calvert math is that you can resource the educational counselors if you need help explaining the math. You can't get that with other math programs. Saxon is one math program that I'm very very interested in checking out. Haven't seen it yet, but I've heard lots of encouraging stuff about it. We'll see what happens.
