Just a few days ago I posted that our phonics lessons were going slllllloooowww. No light bulb moment, just slogging along like soldiers drilling. Day in, day out.

Tonight dd said hey, let's read books!

Sure, I said. I had printed off part of the McGuffy reader, was going to have her read the first few pages (cvc stuff).

Instead, she pulled out a regular kids book and READ IT TO ME! I kept waiting for the total confusion... none. A few words she needed help with (cabinet, for example), but there were only maybe 5 words in the book that she didn't have a clue. SHE READ THE ENTIRE THING TO ME!!! Fluently!! With complete understanding!!! OMG you guys!!!! Obviously it wasn't War and Peace but it ALSO WASN'T "Bob and mary see a zebra. Bob and mary see a giraffe. Bob and mary see a....". Other than the fact that's it's an age appropriate kids' book, it isn't a 'leveled reader' at all. And I haven't read that particular book to her in at least 6 months so it wasn't from memory!!!

    ***happy dance with gleeful tears***

I will never forget the day Faythe came running down the stairs during quiet reading time, exclaiming, "I KNOW WHAT THESE WORDS SAY!!!"

I think you will discover that the "hard" part is over. From now on, "learning to read" will be easy. She'll more or less teach herself. GREAT JOB, MOM!!!

That is so awesome. It is amazing how all kids are so different. She really was learning, but you didn't know it. That is why I am so thankful not to have to deal with PS where they might have said your daughter was delayed or something! My DD was the same way learning to talk. She didn't say a word until about 15 months and the first day she talked, she was talking in sentences! I was so worried...for nothing!!!!!

I am really happy for you. I hope phonics go that well in my house!
