I'm wondering if anyone here has had experience with using the Singapore NEM. I am thinking of using it for a student that really wants to study science. The things I am needing to know are: 1.) Does the curriculum teach you to think mathematically? 2.) Does it teach you the "why" of math as well as the "how"? 3.) Can a student use it on their own, is it understandable.? 4.) Is it adequate preperation for college level science courses for someone majoring in science.? Thanks so much.
I haven't seen a lot of people that use it here. You might try the Singapore Math forum for some of those questions and The Well Trained Mind forum where I'm quite sure I've seen homeschoolers talking about it.
My daughter used it several years ago when she was in 7th grade. We don't care for Singapore - however - I think NEM is a good program, has good student solutions and resources, and teaches a complete program. It would be good for a math/science kid, my daughter was not one of those, but she did pretty well. Kids could potentially use it on their own if they are mathematically inclined and can understand mathematical conepts in written language. If you follow the whole series of books then I think it would be an excellent prep for college.
