Would love to hear what you like and why. My oldest will be in 9th Grade next year. She was wavering between French and Spanish for a language, but has just confirmed she wants to learn Spanish. I would love something that's interactive, but also comprehensive. She is planning on being a chef, and she'd like to live in the Phoenix area when she's grown and established (gotta love my kid! Told her I'd happily move back out there with her!). I did say that learning/knowing Spanish would be more adventageous out there.
I keep hearing about duolingo and it's FREE!!! I like the program on discoveryeducation, but it is expensive to get a membership (but you can also watch them on cosmeo which is cheaper from what I read on satrorismiles blog).
We are using Duolingo. We moved when ds17 was in the middle of a Spanish co-op class. I tried a Rosetta Stone-type program (immersion), and he said it was awful! He loves Duolingo and says he is learning much more.
I'm glad to see this thread. We tried SOS Spanish I, but it only took a couple weeks before we were lost. We're going to try Duoling.
Was looking at duo lingo....question, though....it doesn't seem like they ever get to conversational spanish, am I missing something?
Anyone local that speaks spanish?? Maybe a skill swap is in order. If you really want to learn the language, speaking it is the best way.... maybe paired with study from a program. I'm with the crowd on Rosetta Stone too. I got nothing from it. It was too vague. I didn't know what I was saying when it got to vocabulary. The pictures were not specific enough for me, and there is not really a translation given.
No idea, I have never looked at duolingo, just looked at it. Have you looked at livemocha I think it's called? Also does your library offer mango?
Has anyone every tried Living Language Spanish? I heard about it from a friend who wants me to try it for Emily this summer but I don't know a thing about it.
We will be trying SOS this year, but we are lucky in that Spanish is my husbands first language, so if my son gets stuck, we have help right here.
Duolingo has an option to challenge friends if you know someone else using the program. My ds does not use that option, but it's there. He is still part a fb group with his old co-op mates. He learned a lot in his one semester in the co-op. I wish there was one available here, but everything here is geared towards the 10 and under kids.
I did see that on Duolingo, I'll have to dig around a little more and see if it would work. Unfortunately, we can't do SOS because we're an all MAC household. Last I knew SOS didn't run on MACs. I had thought SOS would be the way to go.....or at least the lifepacs, but I think Spanish is something you need to HEAR as much as see to learn. We do have an amazing lady here who teaches Spanish. The classes, however, conflict with her Science class. And the Science class has become a non-negotiable in this house. I'd sell my wedding ring in order to fund the class if I had to! LOL Her Science teacher is AMAZING! I pray for this woman daily that she will be able to make it through my youngest's Sr. year!!!! LOL I would love something interactive, too. My oldest does well with a mix of stuff. Interactive things, workbooky things, etc. She's doing really well with TT, so adding another computer based thing wouldn't be too hard. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!
