I'm right there with you on the scared to have an opinion b/c of my experience on a <micromanaged and over moderated> board!

 

I'm active at a small number of forums, and I never hold back when I feel strongly about something. For example, I'm convinced that <<edited out my mod>>. In addition, I suggest that <<edited out by mod>> and those who disagree can simply <<edited out by mod>>. If you <<edited out by mod>>, then it's only to be expected that <<edited out by mod>>. So, you see, there's nothing to be scared about. This forum is not <<micromanaged and over moderated>> :wink:

Don't worry - tease away! I don't mind that at all and it gives me license to poke fun at you. It was just the generalizations about all or most liberals I was taking issue with. It might make new members think the board is just for conservative homeschoolers or is hostile towards liberals. And it just gets tiring for those liberals already here.

But heck, tease me for sure. It'll be the day I DON'T get teased that I'll worry and think you've all decided I finally need a good shunning or something!

when i talk about people with liberal views in the future, i will be sure to state that not all feel this strongly, but some do, i will be more clear. for the record, we conservatives feel the same way as you do, so lets all be a bit more clear!

Really this is all just semantics. And I ascribe to the "sticks and stones" theory of life. Further, we can easily see these semantics do have a domino effect , , , so much to the point where you wonder when it will stop. Will I have to refer to myself as a person of the female persuasion instead of just female? Or a person who is a mother? And what happens when we lose all concept of identity just so we DON'T identify with one specific group. What then DOES define us as a "person" if nothing defines us?

Also, what about those who are proud of those identities? I know there is a huge movement in the deaf community, excuse me - by people who are deaf - to retain their deafness. They don't want cochlear implants and think that such things are changing their identities. That it makes being deaf someone "wrong" if it needs a medical fix - wouldn't then NOT calling them deaf be offensive?

I think that political correctness is going too far in what it is trying to do - it is turning an idea into an absurdity.

 

I'm all for being proud of your identity, of where you are from, etc. My g'father came from Italy through Ellis Island. But I also believe we need to be proud of who we are NOW.

 

Being proud of who you are is a double edged sword too.

Black people can have black power shirts on but white people can't have white power shirts on...we'd be shot for being racist!!! You can be white and be proud without being a racist.

I don't know how she is , I just remember us talking about that movie and how TV is just filled with stupid stuff.

Yes, because "white power" is a term often linked with groups who are violently racist while "black power" for most is a more political statement about empowerment. Words aren't just words, they're the sum of the history of their use. If "white power" is a term that's not acceptable these days that's generally because of white people in the past (and present to some degree) who have behaved horribly.

For the record, I'm not proud or ashamed of being white. I'm proud of my kids, my husband, my country but to be proud because of a lack of skin pigment? I might as well be proud of my attached earlobes or long second toe.
