Nice Dawn, very nice. I especially love what I bolded...a nice way to say that and so true. This is true of many things not just the black/white issue..of which by the way bores the heck out of me. Probably because everyone expects me to have an opinion on the matter because I married outside of my race.

I'm only going to comment further by saying that yes words are the sum of their history ......But this isn't a debate about that or if I have big boobs or red hair and want to celebrate that or be proud of that or not ( with is my right to do that) ;)

If words are the sum of their history then well , history has shown us that "american" has been solely used by people of the United States of America and people from other countries see us as 'americans" , so the term "american" should be exclusive to us then, right ? ***** question mark in general not really a question to anyone in particular!!****

My friends from Chile, Argentina, Canada and Columbia laughed so hard when I said that since they were from South America and such that they should be called Americans because of that ...they said no, we are called Americans because we live in the U.S now.

When I lived in Mexico, people took offense when they were referred to as "Americans." They'd sayd, "we aren't American, we're Mexican." Most people from Canada feel the same way.

The song says, "God bless America" and it is not talking about anyone other than The United States.

And if it's not called "America," then I'm not "American," so what am I? A United Stateser?

My kids and I were just talking about this this past week. I would be an Irish American and my hubby a German American. Would that apply to my kids. They would be Irish-German Americans.
    PC is overrated, imo.
I have black friends that do not want me to call them African Americans, just like I prefer white as to Caucasian. There needs to be a limit on what should be banned, if anything. Esp in a country of free speech.
