There is a specific combination of essential oils that were used throughout history by grave robbers to prevent them from getting the diseases normally contracted by being in close proximity to rotting corpses. They even prevented the grave robbers from contracting the plague in the Middle Ages. The combination is both a powerful anti-viral treatement and a powerful preventative.

MIL and I have been researching this blend for a while and she finally tried her hand at making it. The idea is that it can be a useful tool to those who'd rather not get the flu (swine or seasonal) and who don't trust the vacciness safety or effectiveness. You can buy brand name pre-mixed blends, but we haven't been able to find them in town (only online) and shipping is insane.

I don't have the exact proportions she used, but here is a list of the oils:
    Oregeno
    Clove
    Lemon
    Cinnamon
    Eucalyptus
    Rosemary
Some sources include Frankincense and others do not. We left it out simply becuase of it's price.

Anyhow, the oils are blended in small amounts (I know the biggest amount of any of the oils she used was 1 tbs) and added to a carrier oil. Then one or two drops are rubbed in to the bottom of the foot or the back of the neck. You can also put the blend in a difuser or mix with water and spritz around. It's supposed to cleanse the air if you feel you might have brought some buggies home with you. And it smells super good. You can also boil water and add a couple of drops to the pan if you don't have a difuser.

I don't remember what she said she used. I'll have to ask her and get back to you.

Thanks for posting this! I was surprised it didn't contain thyme. I have read where it is a powerful disinfectant.

I've never mixed my own blends before. If you get the proportions, could you possibly post them? Thanks again!

I wonder if I could use this in our nebulizer. All three of the boys start having trouble breathing this time of year so they are all prescribed Albuterol (hence the nebulizer). I have read a lot about inhaling the vapors. MIL suggested having them stand over the pot when I boil water with a few drops of the oil, but I'm paranoid about them ending up burning themselves. Three active (very young) boys + boiling water = a bad idea to me. lol.

I'm glad to hear of someone else actually using theive's oil. My midwife is the one who told me to research it, but I'm not sure if she's actually used it or simply heard about it. She suggested it when I talked to her about flying to PA. Her biggest concern was being in close proximity to so many other people with poor air circulation.

I had a friend who put oil in a vaporizer in the toddler's room and it did burn his sinuses terribly.

Yeah, you've got to really dillute any essential oil you're going to use and more so if it's going to be inhaled. This combination is surprisingly light on the nose, though. At least to me. MIL only used about 1/4 carrier oil, which is actually a really small amount so I thought I might have to dillute it further before using it on the boys (it contained some oils that I thought might irritate the skin.. especially since we are super fair skinned), but it was perfectly fine.

I would dillute it further if we were going to intentionally inhale it.

I did find a site that suggested using vodka as a base for the spritzer/spray. It's not supposed to interfere with the oil. And if you'd rather not use vodka, water can be used if you had just a drop or two of dish soap. It helps keep the oil from seperating as much. You still have to shake it, but it won't instantly reseperate.

I enjoy using Theives Essential Oil by Young Living. I will put a few drops in a potpourri burner and diffuse it in a room when someone is sick. I have this oil mixed in a small bottle with some jojoba oil to rub on a sick ones feet or back and chest. The amount of oil mixed with a carrier oil is important and is different for children than adults.

I like the story behind the oil, also.
