WE watched this and I plan to get a copy of this program, to replay for myself, if and when I doubt what I am doing....

 

We watched it too, Jen. Makes me even more sure of my decision!

 

Where do you get the copies from?

 

All tv shows and special are buy-able. It just takes some digging to find a copy...

Some sell them outright, some sell them only to library or the like....

If I would have recorded it tonight, I would have just sent you a computer copy, but I forgot and caught it after it had already been on for ten minutes.

I was reading the thread on homeschooling and it is hilarious how some of the people who are putting it down have no clue what they are talking about.

 

I was waiting for him to mention homeschool, but the closest he got was mentioning, in passing, the option of "Interactive Learning", while showing a boy sitting at a computer, at home.

Hmmm...

 

And just for he record. I agree with Stossel. It is not the good teachers that make America Stupid, it is the Stupid system that is failing American kids.

I never thought I would live to hear a foreign kid say that they felt sorry for American kids, because the American kids cannot achieve the best, because they are stuck in government sub-par schools! WOW!

Not that I disagre, but I grew up withthe whole ideal that we were so much better off and FREE. Education is the path to freedom... hmmm...

Time travel back to the 80's and shwo this program to yourself or your peers. What would they have thought?

 

I must say, I do not think the decline in schools is fully the reponsibility of the teachers and that parents do need to get involved but it is the decline in moral value and integrity that has gone to far. After reading some of the threads I am so pleased to homeschool. It is funny how so many people jump on the "socialization wagon" when coming against homeschooling. They have no clue the life our children live and no clue about the extra activities most parents have their children involved in. They have molded to the systems concept of socialization.
A dear friend who doesn't totally understand homeschooling frequently asks me how Ems will learn to deal with conflict. I tell him,"The same way she deals with it know. She knows how to apologize if she's wrong and she knows how to let them know she doesn't appreciate being treated a certain way and if the child or person persists she also knows how to walk away and let it slide of her back."

Registered: Sep 01, 2006 I teach college-level, high school, jr. high, elementary, and home schooled children. They have gone to public Universities, private Christian Colleges, private/parochial schools, and public schools. I have taught for over two decades now. My home schooled students do NOT do any better than my other students. In fact, they have a host of different problems.

Every day I see how much a child can absorb when he or she is allowed to pursue their own interests.

This is part of the problem with some home schooling; some of my students are deficient in areas where they have not been challenged. I wonder if this is due, in part, to the strengths or weaknesses of the parent.

Few of my home schooled students interact in a healthy way with others. In part, I believe they're being sheltered and also some are being indoctrinated with the single belief of their parents. Yes, every parent wants the best for their child, but telling them that only homeschooled children have caring parents or that it is superior to a public school education once again makes them fearful to socialize.

I'm sorry that I can't be more supportive of home schooling, (especially since I care deeply for my students well-being) but I have seen way too many horror stories to believe that it was truly what was best for the child. My most successful students--those who did well for me, or at school or at home--were public-school educated. They have proven (to me)in the long run to be the most well-balanced. This does not mean that I think that public schools are perfect--far from it. But putting home-schooling on top is merely self-flattery. I'm sure your children are bright and loving the attention they get from you everyday, but are you really knowledgeable in ALL subjects? Can you possibly be giving them everything they need? Are you sure?



The last few sentences are what made me realize that this person is obviously unaware that many states require children to be examined at the end of the school year. Some people think we are floating around our homes totally clueless as to what children need to know when in truth there are certain state standards that are required to be covered each year. Now how we go about this is our choice. If this person could see the results of our children's state test, I do not think they would be asking,"Can you possibly be giving them everything they need?" He might feel a bit on the foolish side when he realizes most are getting more then required by the state.

Even for those states that do not require a state exam, some still require the child to be tested by somebody who is proficient in the area of education.

Here in California it is not required but our group requires it for accountability purposes. I am thankful for this because whenever I am questioned by family or friends, I allow the results of the exam speak for itself.

 

I watched that last night. I also live in SC. I was glad our Governor said what he said. I don't have any respect for our school system here in SC.

I almost felt bad for the lady he was interviewing. Was she the Govener or the Administrator?

Anyway, they mentioned that the state was dead last (Yes "Someone" has to be last on any list) But she kept getting cornered about how even though they are "Improving", it should be no surprise because all they can do is go up! So OF COURSE you are improving, you are on the BOTTOM!

(As a side note, I was surprised.I thought the schools in our district were the worst, in the nation. Huh. Live and learn, eh?)

I liked that Stossel made the point that it is NOT teachers, per se... I fully agree that teachers have LOST the RULE of their classrooms, because they cannot legaly punish students anymore.... and that parents just do NOT get involved....

The MAIN reason for all of this.....the fact that the "Money does not follow the child". I have to agree.

If I had to send my children to public schools, I would prefer to send them to a school system that is modeled after the free thinking, rewards the best, capitalist free market style choice of schools, than to have a Communistic, Russian-Style No-Choice- Government Run, rewards mediocraty, school. KWIM?

I meant to watch this last night, I'm glad someone posted a link to it on YouTube. As soon as I get the baby in bed, I'm going to watch it... Maybe I'll make my DH watch it too, just so he can see that homeschooling is good for every child. He supports me homeschooling my 10-yr-old, she's from a previous relationship... but he was on the fence as to homeschooling the baby in a few years. He knows what kind of problems our oldest faced in PS, so maybe this will get him on my side of the fence. Ya know?

 

Isn't it sad that teachers are being forced to teach issues (I say issues because as far as I am concerned they are not subjects) that have nothing to do with education?
My sister was going to be a social worker instead of a teacher but didn't know if she could emotionally handle being a social worker so she decided to be a teacher instead. Now she's wondering if she made the right choice.
My neighbors on both sides are social workers. One works for CPS and when she found out I was homeschooling she couldn't praise it enough. She said that parents are the main problem with children today and the school is the next because it has compromised education for an agenda. In fact, in Oakland, CA., they are planning on putting in restrooms that can be used by both sexes just in case the children are confussed about what sex they are. They figure this will lighten their confussion.:x
Honestly, if a child does not know what sex he/she is, then some parents and the system has truly failed in teaching the basics.
This is a warped society we live in.

 

OMG!! You have to be kidding me, a unisex bathroom in a building with hundreds of people!!! I'd have to say it's unbelievable, but it's California, and I definitely am not surprised they are doing it. But I'm glad that your social worker neighbor praises you for homeschooling, that gives me a little more confidence in the government. Maybe not everyone there is an idiot...

 

We were talking at the fence and she asked if Ems was on vacation and I could feel myself tense up inside when I told her she was homeschooled. But after she made me feel so good. My other neighbor, who is also a social worker, wants to homescool her granddaughter, who she is raising, but can't afford to stop working. My cousin is a student counselor (sp?) at a high school and he said that when his two children are old enough to start school, they will be homeschooled. My older daughter was in public school and her teacher and his wife, who is a teacher too, also homeschooled their daughter. I think that speaks volumes.

 

That it does... I went to college with an older gentleman who was going through the teacher education program to be a high school science teacher. Him and his wife were homeschooling, and planned on continuing after he got his teaching certificate.
