I got an idea for a piece of art I'd like to do for my mom, but I thought I'd run it by you ladies first... I'd like to use pages from a Bible I have that's completely falling apart as part of the piece. Is that Ok? I realize that in all my years of being a Christian, I've never heard anyone say it would be wrong, but I've also never seen it done (hymnals? Yes. Bibles? No.). Thoughts?
Personally, I think it would be fantastic. I look at it this way, if you don't use it, isn't it still just falling apart? Then what? Throw it away? At least this way, it is still being used in a meaningful way that could be handed down as an heirloom someday. Yes, it does feel "wrong" somehow at first, but just think of all of great grandma's old Bibles that are sitting around in closets or trunks that are just rotting. I would rather they be put to good use one way or another. God knows your heart. There is no disrespect intended. I'd like to know how it turns out!
A "craft" of sorts that I've always wanted was Bible wallpaper. I've always thought it would be wonderful to see the entire Bible at once, be able to write on it, use strings to cross-reference things, and just sit and read... especially while falling asleep at night. I realize you can't do that with a Bible because the pages are double-sided, but it's a thought. Like a flag, the Bible itself doesn't matter. It's just paper and ink, like a flag is just fabric and ink. What's important are that the words are written on your heart, and to do that, you have to read it. Does it matter if it's in book form, scroll form, or craft form? Nope. As long as you're still able to get messages from the pages, and the craft is done in a respectful way, why not?
That's what I was thinking, too, but didn't want to cross some unknown boundary into the distasteful. My mom is a pastor and LOVES playing Scrabble. I've got a lot of Scrabble themed craft ideas and already ordered a huge bag of tiles. I wanted to tie it all together with wall art that incorporates pages from the Bible and Scrabble tiles spelling out "The Word." My tiles should be in Tuesday, so I'll let you all know how it turns out.
Pictures better be arriving shortly as well!! LOL I love crafty crafts!! I always tell my husband that if we were millionaires I would have 2 Cricuts and all the arts and crafts supplies you could imagine and I would go NUTS with it! I love your idea, Amie!!
I think it's a really neat idea. As Leissa said, your heart is in the right place and you are doing something very meaningful with the pages, not just ripping them up to use as... oh I don't know... but, you get my point! haha I can't wait to see photos of the finished product! The more I think about it, the more I really love it. I've seen some really neat projects done with music sheets and hymnal pages. A meaningful page / section from a Bible would be really neat on those same projects.
I'd love to hear/see the idea as well. Bible pages are so thin I would think gluing them would cause readability issues, I"d love to hear more!
Yeah, I'm starting to wonder the same thing myself. But I think if I (gently) decoupage them to a white canvas it may work. Or use a spray adhesive. I need to ponder on it, and fortunately, I have until Tuesday before the tiles arrive. I also failed to consider the standard dispersal of letters. ha! I need 5 "W"s, but there are only two in a set (and at $10 a set I'm not buying two more)! DH, the artist, is going to paint on the backs of letters I don't need. Hopefully he can do it steady enough that they don't look hand-painted.
Have you considered printing up you own Bible verses on regular weight paper? For more 'W' tiles try Etsy-some shops will sell you like 10 of one letter. I'm guessing 'W' isn't real popular so you can probaly come out pretty cheap that way... http://www.etsy.com/search/supplies?ref=auto&q=scrabble+tiles&view_type=gallery&ship_to=US
Or would those transferrable letters work? you can get them in different fonts. They are the ones you just scratch off onto your surface.
The look I'm going for would only come from real Bible pages. ETSY! I always forget about Etsy. I'll check there in the morning. I can buy them directly from Hasbro, but it takes up to 6 weeks for shipping!
you could use deco pog.. (spelling ?) to cover the scripture page... My cousin made a necklace with a page from an old Bible that had fallen out and used deco stuff and it came out cute and you could read the page... just thought I would give you that little info.
Thank you Thank all of you so much. I have a very old Bible that I bought at a thrift store (sadly there are a lot of them). I have been wanting to use it in my collage pieces as they are Christian based, but I kept thinking God would be mad at me. You are right. It is paper and ink and the real message is in my heart. Thank you.
I do have a wall hanging with Amazing Grace. Personally, I think it sound like a neat idea. I mean, if the Bible is falling apart, what a neat way to "save" it! Looking forward to seeing the pictures!
I guess I never followed up on this one. Jackie, here is the post about how I used the pages. http://actressdancer.blogspot.com/2012/08/a-word-of-art.html
Oh, dear!!! I didn't notice how old this was! I'm very bad at checking the date! Really neat, though, Amie!
What is the difference between doing that and writing the words on a page and using it? Especially if you're using an old copy of the Bible that is falling apart to begin with?
Oh, I know, and I'm fine with that. You must absolutely follow your convictions. I'm just curious; not trying to change your mind or anything. It wasn't AT ALL my intent to offend!
