Anyone ever toilet train a cat? DH and I have been thinking about it and I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience with this. I know its something that's very wierd but I'm not allowed to change the littler box and dh hates doing it so we're hoping that this will work and then I can con dh into letting us get another kitten.

I know of someone who litter trained their dog (very small dog), but never heard of toilet training a cat. :D

I know it can be done. I THINK it involves placing paper with litter on it over the toilet, then making a hole in the center of it, then slowly making the hole bigger. I've never tried it. Did you ask the vet? I'll ask our neighbor who is a REAL animal person...into animal rescue, etc. BIG TIME.

My professional opinion is that it would not become routine for the cat, and given the option of anything that remotely resembles litter (dirt, newpaper, back of rags, etc.) the cat's instincts would kick in and it would choose the "litter".

I would think that the toilet training might be a novelty or "trick" if you will, but not a permanent solution. Just my thoughts (and I have been wrong a couple times in my life  ).....I'll look into it.

I do know people who housebreak their cats, though. The cat will go to the door just like a dog when it needs to use the potty.

We had a cat for over 15 years. Toward the last years we could not keep litter from between the pads on his paws. We tried different litters, we put rubber backing down on the path he took from the litter pan into the house. It drove me bananas and there was always litter on the carpet. I see now they sell a unit that has these spiral steps that the cat has to walk down after he goes, that supposedly helps to clean its paws. It might even have one of those self cleaning pans.

Thanks for your input. I"m still not sure if we are going to or not. I think if we were it is something we should have started when the kids left to go to grandma's for the summer but since their due home in one week I don't really think its something we should do right now. Basically a time issue.

Oh and Brooke, I had already found that site but thanks anyway. There are a bunch of other sites out there on the issue.
