This is just part of an advertizment from walmart. I actually think that a lot of grocery stores are going to be simular if you look in the ads and use coupons.

A turkey dinner for eight as low as $20
According to a survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, last year’s average cost of a turkey was roughly $1.19 per pound. Beginning today, select Grade A turkeys are available for 40 cents per pound at Walmart.* These gobblers are part of Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving menu guaranteeing family favorites will be on the dinner table this holiday season. Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving feast includes:
    • One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
    • Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
    • Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
    • Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
    • One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
    • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
    • One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

    * turkey brand varries by store.

it sure would be interesting if anyone would be able to share if this is REALLY possible, and do a comparible list with other brans or items.

My MIL works for Wal*Mart in GA, I'll ask her and see what she says their turkeys cost. I don't think I could do Thanksgiving for $20, but I think it's good for families that need to watch their budget to have this available for them.

Right now our local Wegmans has .39 per lb turkeys if you spend $25. I plan on picking one up this week even though we will not be here for thanksgiving. With that price I could make dinner for around $25 with making pumpkin pie and my stuffing from scratch. It could be cheaper if there are any good sales on cranberry sauce or veggies.

HEB is .89 a pound for turkeys right now. I rarely grocery shop at Walmart, so I don't know what their prices are.

    Ok - I will laugh a little - and no this isn't a joke..... I am personally charging $5.99/lb for a fresh turkey :)

But I will have one of my own (only because that turkey is evil and needs to go on my plate).....

So - I can see doing it - but there are things to make a cheaper - fresh cranberries are 99 cents and make easy dressing..... make your own rolls (they'll taste better!).... things like that....but my family seems to eat more than that (but it's usually more than just 8)

I'll tell you after Thanksgiving - I'm cooking mine Friday. I've had a heritage breed turkey which was very yummy a few years ago, but this is my first year doing these things for retail sale and they are pasture raised.

Giant Eagle and Krogers in Central Ohio is selling turkeys for .29/lb. At Kroger's, that's with a $30 food purchase, and with your Kroger's card. That's typical right before Thanksgiving. I usually buy two. One is given to a mission that serves a BIG meal to over 1,000 people on Thanksgiving Day. A REAL Thanksgiving meal with all the trimming! The other I put in the freezer until around February (since I don't cook for Thanksgiving OR Christmas!).

Jackie, is your Giant doing the free turkey with 300 points?
    Do they do gas rewards?

Yes to gas rewards, but haven't heard about a free turkey. I'm kind of divided on Giant Eagle. While I love their sales, over-all they are higher than many places, so I usually only buy stuff on sale. Or if I need just one or two things RIGHT NOW, because they're closest.

I bought gas yesterday at Krogers. I had to go to the kids' co-op after staff meeting (which, of course, are nowhere near each other!!!), and forgot we were low. Where I got off the freeway, gas was $2.59, high for us right now. So I let it go. While they were at co-op, I went to check the price at Krogers. (By that time, I didn't have enough to get home!) It was $2.49, so I was much happier. Then when I went to pay, it said I had ten cents off per gallon (!!!) with my card! I wa SO glad I didn't buy it by the freeway!

Giant is much higher, that's true. I follow the circular and don't buy things not in the circular.

we got a "free" turkey at Albertsons but their spend limit was $100, but the turkey is honeysuckle white and I like that kind. it was also to be 15 pounds or less ours was a little more but we had a $1 off coupon wich did make it free. (plus Albertsons had good deals last week.)

we also got one at the Wal-mart neighborhood market and I think it was like .60 lb

we did buy 3 cans of green beans that were the wal-mart brand, 2 boxes of stove top stuffing, I want to make apple pie and I already have the apples. we are also going to make the fresh cranberry sauce but they were not on sale like someone else here said they could get for .99.............

With the exception being the turkey, I can do better than this at Aldi. :D We travel for TG...but after TG all the turkeys go on sale around her for about .20/lb. I got two 25 lb turkeys last year for $10. I used one for Christmas, and then cooked another mid summer to do all sorts of stuff with it.

All the extras I could get at aldi - that list I would probably pay about $10 for. MAYBE.

    :)

Out west here, along with Walmart, we have Fred Meyer's and Safeway, both of which usually do the free turkey with $50 purchase, they may have raised that to $100 by now. Don't remember the weight the turkeys need to be under, probably 15 lbs. I'm vegetarian, but when my boys were here (they're now off at school), I'd get enough groceries to get 2 turkeys, and we'd donate them to a shelter or to families we knew that couldn't afford to buy them.

I think that's a good deal for a family of 8. Sure, maybe you can find some things cheaper somewhere, but it's still cheaper than many places, and a good deal for a family of 8! Many people spend WAY more than that on their Thanksgiving meals!

I usually go to a place that I know will be cheapest overall for the things I need.

I usually wait until right after Tday and buy a couple of turkeys from HEB for around 30 cents/ lb I also like to watch then and buy their fully cooked turkeys on clearance too.

When I first saw this thread I was hoping that it was for an already cooked tday dinner for $20 I know that it was wishful thinking. I usually love cooking the whole meal myself. But this year my baby boy is allergic to everything (wheat soy, milk, eggs, nuts, and something else i can't remeber at the moment) since I am nursing I can't eat any of the good stuff. So I wanted to have somebody else cook it. I think that we might forgo the normal and eat something like steaks. It is also my dd 4th birthday.

HEB does have a combo loco deal this week. If you buy a spiral ham, you get a 10 lb. Riverside turkey free. They were out of smaller turleys when I went, but I plan to go back.
