When I went to bed Sunday night, I felt fine. But I awoke at 3 am feeling like I had something stuck in my throat; you know, like a tiny bit of food that just wouldn't swallow down. It felt kind of hard, so it was irritating, but not "painful." It's only on the one side (the left "pipe"). By last night it was painful. The whole side of my neck was sore, too (like muscle sore). By the time I went to bed, I was getting pain into my jaw anytime I swallowed.

This morning it's nearly unbearable. It still feels like I have something in my throat. But it also feels like my throat is swollen inside. Anytime I talk or yawn or swallow it feels like I'm being stabbed from my neck to my ear, up through my jaw line. Just telling the boys good morning brought me to tears.

What it does not feel like:
A swollen gland (there's no swelling on the outside, and the pain is in the wrong spot)
Strep (had it many, many times)
    Tonsilitus (ditto)
A scratchy, sore throat (like from an illness)

    What I've tried:
    Gargling with Listerine
Drinking - hot tea, lots of water, a shot of vodka (in case the alcohol would help)
Swabbing the spot with a Q-Tip
Making myself gag to dislodge whatever

Do any of you have any experience with anything like this?!

Sometimes the epiglottis can malfunction and spasm. The epiglottis is part on the vocal cords which could explain why talking is painful. It feels like there is something in your throat but you might be able to talk and in some cases swallow liquids. If it doesn't clear up within a short period of time or becomes more painful go to your emergency room or doctor. If left for a while it can cause swelling, which can lead to difficulty in breathing.
You should see the doc right away.

I'd say a throat spasm also. Get in to the Doc's right away.

Let us know what happens, hun.

sometimes if you've eaten something that scratches the throat (say a Dorito or corn chip) it could be scratched or irritated and feel like there is something stuck when its just irritated. Hope you are feeling better though.

I thought of that as a possibility. But I didn't eat anything Sunday that could have scratched my throat. We had eggs and pancakes for brunch and steak, corn, and mashed potatoes for Dinner. lol

If you haven't tried it yet I would try turning your head into different positions like leaning to one side and then swallow. If you do have something lodged in there than can free it.

Amie, I've had something that sounds like the same thing, for about the past week or so. I'm a little hoarse, but it comes and goes. The pain is mostly on my right side, mostly kind of in that little corner just behind the last molar, where the tongue, gum, and throat come together. I've tried everything too. I thought it was just from my usual post-nasal drip combined with sleeping with my mouth open the other night, but it's not going away. When you find out what fixes it, let me know, would ya?

Do you still have tonsils? My daughter had hers out in college, but before having them out she had trouble similar to what you describe. Praying for you.

    I do.

I've never, ever, ever has pain like this with tonsilitus, but from what you're saying, it's a symptom?

And only on one side? Without a sore throat?

Certainly not saying that it's not tonsillitus, but it's what you've said about it feeling like your throat is swollen inside and the pain from you neck to your ear. I experienced a throat spasm like this several times before, and it was coupled with thick drainage so my throat felt swollen inside. So sorry as I know how terrible it feels. Praying for healing.

Maybe gargling with a few drops of tea tree oil and water may help.

Oooh! I forgot try tea tree oil. I've been using cayenne and garlic. Thank you!!!

I don't have any drainage, though.

Well, the reason it feels like there is something in my throat is because there IS something in my throat.

DH looked at it tonight and there is clearly a rather large nodule of some sort. So it's not spasms and he said it's not swollen. There is a clearly bulbous nodule.

At this point the pain is nearly unbearable. I just need a bit of grace to get through tonight (and the final I have to take). I'm trying to find a friend (or friends) to lend me money for the doctor tomorrow. If I can't find anyone who can help for a day, I'll go when DH gets paid Friday. But I have a dress rehearsal tomorrow night for a really big show, so I'd like to not cry every time I speak.

Mine was better for awhile, but it's back. Weird - it seems to sort of come and go. And so does my voice. Right now it hurts from my ear all the way down to my larynx. Not real bad, mostly just highly annoying.

I went to the Dr. today. Took two general practitioners and a specials to tell me it's an infection. It's contained in the cyst and they won't lance it :(

They are super afraid of me going septic. Like, I'm supposed to take my temp every hour and go to the ER if it goes up even .1*.

But they didn't give me anything for the infection because they don't know if it's viral or bacterial.

So now we wait. For what, I do not know.

Oh, that is definitely not a satisfactory plan. Did they give you a time frame for this waiting? What did the specialist say?

The specialist said, "Yep, it's an infection of some sort." And left the room.

They swabbed my throat again and sent it for cultures (the strep test is done in the office lab). She said it will probably be next week before they have the result back, but that it's likely the cultures won't tell them anything. But they're going to wait until next week to get the results before they decide the next step. *sigh*

In the meantime, I have a (paid) performance tomorrow night that I have to suffer through. The show, as they say, must go on.
